Fn P90

I have a question to those, who have used a P90 smg.
Due to the short barrel, does it have a large recoil? and is there a large muzzle flash?
thanks in advance,
Max

Why would it?

The evil cop killing armor chomping 5.7 round was developed around the idea of a pointed smg bullet, with low recoil, high capacity, armor piercing ability, and to be fired from pistol length or smg length barrels. So why would it have recoil or flash, being designed as a pistol and smg round replacement? Does 9mm have a lot of recoil and muzzle flash out of pistol, smg, and carbine platforms  ?

PS- Never shot the little bugger, but felt qualified to chime in having seen the,"Monsterous" 5.7 round and pistol. The 5.7's capacity and velocity rule(especially if it fragments like 5.56:eek: )

Well, it's not THAT effective. You get a pretty messy wound track (beats any other FMJ pistol track, anyway, and it's up near decent 9mm JHP), but it's not an M193.

Out of a P90. I dunno what it's like out of a Five-seveN.

P90 is very comfortable to fire and especially if you chose to 'live a little' and fire sustained bursts from it; I found the design conducive to keeping on target. Ripple off ten rounds at a go and it remains on the target.

The only thing I personally disliked about it was the size of the cocking handles, which are great if your fingers are size 2s where mine are size 9s!

Can someone post photos of bullets from either 5.7 platform shot into gelatin? I would be interested to see if this tumbling effect would happen reliably through clothing and at 25 yards as well, and still manage to have good penetration.

Taken from a post of mine at The Five-seveN Forum..

Well, here are all of the pictures I could find of the SS190 in gelatin, no pics of the SS192 or any of the other ammo types. All pics are of the round fired out of the P-90, not Five-seveN. Enjoy!

- This one (fired into 20% ballistic gelatin) shows about 25 centimeters penetration, or 9.8 inches. Note the enlarged temporary cavity as the projectile goes into yaw/tumble and ends up rear forward in the gelatin. Also notice how the yawing causes the bullet to track upwards a bit from the wound path. This picture is promotional from FN.

- This one (fired into 10% ballistic gelatin from 20 meters) shows about 35 centimeters penetration, or about 13.5 inches. Once again, the round tumbles and ends up rear forward. This picture is also promotional from FN.

- This one is also in 10% gelatin. If you look closely, it looks to be about 10.5 inches penetration with a lot of yaw. The enlarged temporary cavity stays enlarged from about the 3-inch mark to the 9-inch mark. The bullet ends rear forward in this one too. This picture came from a Houston, TX PD article on the P-90, see HERE.

That's the first time I've seen bullet gels on that round. Looks like it would be a natural choice for military usage. Looks like, at least.

so, let me sum up what you've written (and what I thank you for):
-The P90 has low recoil and muzzle flash
-it's ammunition, the 5.7 mm SS 190, is very powerful and fast

Only one thing's left on my mind:
Is this great SMG used by the U.S. Military?

I'm impressed with the P90 at least! Certainly adequate penetration and the yawing effect seems to be reliable enough, but I wouldn't want to rely on that for wounding. I mean, in gelatin it happens all the time, in the human body what happens if it hits the sternum or a rib?

Nevertheless its an SMG, so you've got 49 extras behind that first bullet!

I want one!

Now as for the Five-seveN.... Ugh...

Is any SMG used by our military? I've seen pics of our troops in Iraq with PPSh's to make up for the M16's lack of FA for house clearing  . Not that I'd mind picking up one of those things.....
