FN Five-seveN

Does anyone have a FN Five-seveN? Do you like it? Was it worth the cost? What are some of the quirks? I have a SBR PS90 and I really want to get the matching pistol but I'm having a hard time justifying $1,200 when the rifle cost the same amount.

No experience with one but I hope to change that in the future. The price of the thing is my hang up as well, if it were $500-$600 I would already have one, at twice that amount I will just continue to look at them and drool.

I have shot them in both the carbine and the pistol. Both were cool, but in my opinion the guns and the ammo are overpriced.
I would not pay the asking price of the guns and I would REALLY stay away from the ammo. In my opinion it's prices at about 300% what it should be.
22 wmr performance at $1 a shot or more.

But some folks will pay it.

Some folks will vote for their own destruction too, because both of them are motivated my emotions and not facts.

I've had a 57 for about 8 years. It's a high quality, reliable pistol that is loads of fun. I bought one on the used market for a good price. A gun well worth owning. Can't think of any "quirks". It's pretty straight forward and easy to shoot well.

Wyosmith incorrectly posted his statement. He fixef it in the next statement.

I like the five7 but I can't/won't pay what it costs to own and shoot one. Although, given a choice I would purchase the pistol before the long gun. The ballistics in the pistol are OK but not very impressive in a carbine.

My FFL dealer let me shoot one of his. The pistol that is. He carry's it. It was like $just under $900.00 then. I would not buy one I don't trust the 5.7 round. But there is something out there called the 22tcm. It has 300fps over it & you can just change out the barrel with a 9mm. It is a 1911 type gun & has a 19 or so rounds in the mag. I would like to have that or shoot it. And the 22tcm ammo does not cost big bucks & more then one ammo co. makes it.

I have a tan frame version, previous version now

Its a fun gun to shoot. Ammo is a pain, but fun to let rip with a nice fire ball and decent report.

Trigger is not the best. Fixed sights are average, I'm in the process of converting it to adjustable sights.

FiveSeven

I have had a FiveSeven pistol for seven or eight years. It is reliable, accurate. light and much misunderstood.
For instance:
22 wmr performance at $1 a shot or more.
Nah. 5.7X28 ammo typically runs about $.50 a round, under $30 a box. Not to say that is not expensive but it ain't $50 a box. For comparison, .22 Magnum ammo (when you can find it) is about half the price ($.18-$.40/round).
Which brings us to performance......yes .22 magnum performance (from a rifle)...the FiveSeven gives you .22 Magnum rifle ballistics from a pistol. I like to think of it as a varmint rifle that I can put in my pocket.

Having a SBR version of the PS90 I will say that for me the cost wasn't so much the difficulty with the ammunition it was more so the lack of places to buy it around me. Also what are the holster options that exist for the pistol? That would also be important for me?

Well now....this is news to me. If it comes down a lot more it may sell.

When I was first introduced to the 5.7s the FN Rep was trying to sell the ammo to me at $50 for 50 rounds. 250 rounds was "only" $235

I was teaching a class in Reno to Sheriff's officers and to some personnel from Reno PD, and the FN Rep came to show their new guns.

We all shot them and they were pretty cool, but WAY more expensive then the M4 carbines we were using and with ammo that was $1 a shot. Keep in mind too that the carbines were full auto. So at about $4 to $10 each time a cop pulled the trigger in the full auto mode, we all laughed at the notion that the county and the city were going to pay that much to train their cops.

He didn't get even one sale.

That was when the guns were "Law Enforcement Only" but he told us the pistols would be sold to civilians soon.
Nearly all the officers told him to show us what the 5.7 would do that their 9mm and 40s would not do.

He could only say "it holds more ammo" and "it's light weight".

At $1 a shot no one cared about it being light and holding a lot of ammo.

A Glock 17 with one extra mag has a lot of ammo too, but you can actually shoot the Glock if your last name is NOT Rockefeller. And at that time cops could by a Glock through the department for just a bot over $300 and M-4s were costing the department about $400

If the ammo is down to .4 now that's good news, but at close to the same level of performance as a 22 mag, it's still too high. (I think anyway....)

Had I won the powerball last night, I MAY have bought a 5-7, because then i would be able to afford the ammo to shoot it!

I did shoot one at a range day, smooth, good feel in the hand, cool gun.

But the cost of the pistol, and then... a decent deal would be $0.50/round... 20 round magazines... $10 per magazine? eek.

Since I've owned my 5.7 ammo has been readily available. I bought it for $15 to $18 a box then. Now, it is still readily available and runs from $20 to $24 a box. This price compare favorable with any quality ammo. The last time I saw 5.7 side by side with 22TCM it was only about $1 less than the 5.7. The cheapest .22mag I've seen, (when it's actually in stock!!) was $13. Usually it's closer to $20.

Ammo for the 5.7 is easy to find and costs about the same as any ammo. Easier to find than .22lr or .22mag around here. The gun itself is expensive, no question, but ammo cost is not a reason to pass one up if you find a good deal. I paid $700 for mine and would do it again. Great gun.

I too have fondled them at the LGS. If it were a few hundred bucks cheaper or if there were more choices in gun for it, I'd get involved.

I picked one up used at a gun show about a year a half ago. I absolutely love it and carry it more than any other gun I own. I use a SHTF IWB holster and can't even tell I have it on me. I've also been able to find ammo for around $18 a box which I don't think is out of line. It is a blast to shoot.

My biggest issue with the FN Five-seven and why I sold mine was because the ammo you can get for it at about $17-$22 a box is nurtured ammo it is ss197 IIRC. It is not the round it was intended to shoot. You lose most of the advantages of the platform with it.

This is the ammo you want: FN 5.7X28MM (SS198LF) 24GR and it will cost you in the $.65 to $.75 a round range which is similar to hollow point rounds in other calibers.

Lots of people plink with the SS197 and use the SS198 for defense.

If you want the "real" deal you have to pay a ton and find someone hording SS190.

Is that the V-Max tip? We can get 50 round boxes from our supplier of FNH V-Max (the blue tip) but I can see where the expense comes in. With the cost to us, heck I'd have to sell it for around $26.99 a box to customers but that only comes out to 53.9 cents a round which isn't the end of the world. Half the price of my 308 haha.

IIRC V-Max tip is the SS197.

The Five-Seven's cartridge is DEFINITELY better than a .22 WMR when used for self defense, but I am with everyone else here who says the price of the gun and it's ammo is ridiculous!
If FN or anyone else brought out a weapon of similar capacity, AS WELL AS a compact of slim design but 12-15 shot capacity, all for around $600, they would be flying off of the shelves. I'll bet some police agencies would even give it a look at a good price.

I find these guns very interesting but feel about the same way about it as many others have said. The guns are just too expensive. If they were somewhere around $700 I would probably already own one, but I don't want to give over $1000 for something that is not .50 caliber or a collectible.
