Ok, I bought a Heisse FN FAL. I love the gun, but hope that I didnt just screw myself. I paid 520 for it with two surplus mags. The gun seems to be well made, and the receiver seems to be fine, no tool marks or anything obvious like that. It came from ****ury arms, and they call it a sporter, even though there is nothing sport like about it. The only thing about it that does not look right is it has a silver metalic nob on the charging handle, instead of a black one. Can that be replaced with a more appropriate looking one? It looks a bit silly on the rifle. Any info and help I can get from you on how to make this a positive 500 dollar experience would be greatly appreciated.

Read up Wayne Schlickenmeyer's posts...he's got an identical item and likes his. I've fired his gun (his is on Imbel receiver though) and liked it. Not sure about the knob, try Federal Arms in Minneapolis.
My own FAL is a Hesse (not Century though) and it has been reliable and fun...left hand cocking takes some getting used to. Only down side: must not overlube or the charging handle projects oil droplets on cycling.

The kocking knob is one of your US parts and would cost around $50 to replace with a DSA version. Try painting and baking with GunKote or MolyKote or something similar from Brownells.

Actually the knob is not one of the US parts, the charging handle it is attached to is, as it is considered by the BATF to be an "operating rod" If you just replace the knob on an imported handle it is still considered imported, however you should be able to use an original knob on a new handle, if it will fit.

A better solution would be to pick up some alumihyde(sp) or something else that turns Aluminum black. I can't remember the name of the stuff that I use but it is by the same company that makes Permablue. I just used some fine sandpaper on the knob and ten applies this stuff to it. It smells like rotten eggs but that goes away after it dries.
