FN 49

Has anyone had any experience with these Handguns. Kieslers got in a huge shipment of them. They go for $449.00 with normal sites or 519.00 with night sites. The one I want is .40 cal with nightsites and has a satin stainless finish. They seem like a mix between a Glock and a Sig. Anyone know if they make them in a .45
Are they good guns? Is this a good price?
Thanks guys

Looks like the same gun every other company makes.
I place this is the SIGMA catagory as another Glock knock off.

You might laugh in the face of FEAR... but unless your armed, its a nervous, unconvincing, little laugh.

I've only dry fired one at a store, it had a horrible crunchy trigger pull. Felt kind of like a vp70. Thats the only experience that I have with these.

Oddly enough, the striker action on the FN 49 allows for a double-strike. You can dry fire all you want without needing to rack the slide. It feels better in the hand than the Sigma, but I would not trade one of my Glocks in on one.

I looked at one this morning before coming to work.
I needed first hand to formulate a better opinion.

The feel was good... better than Glocks or others. Felt solid enough. It pointed very well and came up inline naturally and was on target without having to adjust sight picture for me. The trigger is typical of these polyframed rush to manufacture type guns... meaning its a nasty trigger no better or worse than others. They are all bad. (The only exception IMO os the nice 3.5 trigger glock puts out)
FN is an old company... Browning worked closely with them. This may be why I am inclined to like FN. They design very very good weapons that are used world wide. If you cant get HK - FN is just as good. (better?)
With this gun's market nitch I would say that if you didnt like the USP for whatever reason - this is a good option for you.
The price is very good as well - especially around 400 then this gun is a bargain.
2nd strike ability is debatabl value... but this is showing that this is a true DAO auto pistol and is just as safe as Uncle Joe's 686 revolver.

I like it. It aint nothin spectacular - but it looks to be a good unit for field work at field work pricing. I aint selving any of my 1911s for this one - but if I was required NO SA Autos... I might put this one into consideration.

Actually, I heard some former S&W engineers now at FN designed it, hence the similarity to the Sigma?

Haven't seen any new ones on the shelves around town, but there is already a used one for sale. :)

Charles Petty wrote it up in the July 2000 Guns FYI.

Thanks everyone. I have decided to get a Walther P99 Instead. It is about 200 more but it feels a lot better to me and has a longer history.

This is FNs attempt to get into the North American LE market I believe. I think they are following a Glock strategy of offering competitive pricing and maintenance deals to law enforcement with the idea that they will capture civilian market sales in this fashion.

I think this pistol is also why they killed the .40 BHP. They didn't want to create any competition for their new pistol (or the DA High-Power variant they have in the works).

The 'new' BDA9 (briefly cataloged in the mid-'80s as the HP-DA) has an atrociously poor trigger stroke...drag, hitch, drag, hitch, lurch, click. I can't think of another modern DA design that rivals its abhorent and abominable action. Even the SA stroke is awful.

I'm left wondering if it has improved from the poor-performing samples of the various JSSAP XM9 tests.

Soemone on this board has shot an FN49. I don't remember who it was, but his general opinion of the gun was very bad all around! I like the double strike capability, but that's about all I know about the gun!

I may be the guilty party as I own one. I am now able to shoot it and get combat accuracy. I saw a target from a magazine article and my target was about the same i.e.; not good. I think it is a fine weapon for LEOs but it isn't for me. I prefer Glocks especially the Glock 27. Regards, Richard.

It was me. Yes, I still don't like them, but the guys at FN promised to improve the trigger by going back to the pre-production design. Other than that, it's pretty much a Sigma by any other name.....

Nyterider, I do not know if the guilty party was me or you. I have a FN49 and I have been thinking this over. I think the solution is to take a trigger similar to a Kahr pistol's trigger and install it in a FN49. It would take the FN49 from so so to a good service pistol. Your comments are welcome. Regards, Richard.

However, it could be a good idea to have Kahr produce somethint sized
like a Glock 19 with a socially relevant magazine capacity and
somewhat larger grips so even my long fingers can get a tackdriving
trigger pull. The K9 has a rather low web-of-the-hand to trigger
finger distance.

mussi, I have size 12 hands with long fingers. I can shoot a Kahr 9 with ease. There are somethings I want to upgrade but the trigger works great for me! What do I want to upgrade? New grips, Novak night sights, and a nice finish. With this said, I can live with the Kahr as it is. Regards, Richarrd.
