FN-49 Pistol

FN FortyNine

I have been doing a lot of searching for the next pistol for 'the Misses'. She has a Kahr MK9 for carry, but when I'm testing client sites at 3:00am, I want to know that she has MUCHO pistola at hand if somebody comes a'knockin.

My requirements were that it must have a reputation for reliability, must have readily available full-cap mags, must be 9mm, and it MUST be less than $350.

In my search, I've come across the FN FortyNine. Actually, almost all I've come across is the fact that they exist. There is VERY little info on the web about them.

So - Is the FN FortyNine a reliable pistol? Does it even come in 9mm? Do BHP mags fit it? How's the trigger?

I'd also love some dimensions on it too. Because if it turns out to be a good pistol, I may have to have one for myself in .40... something to carry when I want more rounds than the Kahr P40 has to offer.

Keep in mind, I'm not YET looking for input on "what pistol". I'm going to finish my complete list of requirements before I do that.

Anyway, thanks for stopping in.

The FN Forty-Nine has one of the all-time worst triggers ever.

Get a couple of CZ 75 B's, they'll meet all of your requirements.

FN-49 pistol for the missus?

Ummm, maybe not such a good idea. An 8mm Mauser pistol would be a handful for anyone, even if it is gas operated.

May I suggest the FN FortyNine instead? ;)

AH! So I'm spelling it wrong... Thanks Tamara!

Blades67 - I knew I was forgetting something up there... We're both left handed, so the CZ is out. Believe me, if the 75 Compact or PCR came in an ambi, I wouldn't still be looking around.

don't know a thing about them except that they exist. I also saw several in Franklin's in Athens if you need to check one out in person (and are anywhere near Athens!).

If you are a US citizen then no full capacity mags are available in 9mm. 10 rd mags only. I have heard that the trigger is pretty awful but I have not experienced it first hand.

Glock 17, 19 have 17 and 15 round mags available respectively and will work for a lefty. Same with the Walther P-99 with 16 rd 9mm mags. There are more, this is just but a short list.

Sorry to go off-subject, but how about supplementing your Mrs' Kahr with a 12ga shotgun? I am assuming you are writing about home defense.

CWL - Not a problem at all...

She has access to my Winchester Defender, but she's EXTREMELY hard headed, and thinks her Kahr is plenty. She won't spend any time learning a new battery because she's a)not interested b) has NO free time away from work during daylight hours even if she was. That's why I want to get a specific style of 9mm pistol. She was raised properly, out in the Alabama Boonies, so she's quite familiar with bolt action 30.06 rifles for deer, and 9mm semi-automatic pistols for personal protection. She can even clear a jam.

Mind you, I was/am not trying to start another "best HD pistol for wife" post... Unless I absolutely hit bottom on my search... but even then I will have very specific criteria, as well as a few choices listed.

I've got a lot of experience with handguns, but I realize there's always something new to learn or some new gun you don't know about.

Anyway, thanks for the input, it is much appreciated.

Onslaught:

If her hands are big enough, I'd suggest a Glock 17 or 19. Standard capacity mags are available and most importantly, the manual of arms is the same as her Kahr MK9 -- both are striker-fired with no manual safety, both have the slide stop and mag release controls in the same place. If her hand isn't quite big enough for the Glock 17 or 19, there are a couple places that will do a grip-frame reduction.

The FN has one of the worst triggers I have ever had the displeasure of trying. Long, gritty, and heavy. Not quite as bad as a VP70 but close.

FN 49, (the rifle) on the other hand, now that would be fun.
