fmj that deform?

I have seen gel testing every now and then where they use fmj and the fmj only penetrates 16-18" and deforms. (not talking about federal efmj)

Is this common? If not how often can this occur?

Are there certain name brands that deform more often than others?

If we're going to have a pointed discussion on this, we'll need to know the caliber, powder load, and bullet weight of the rounds in question.

Usually when we are speaking of common handgun ammunition, the phrase "Only Penetrates 16-18 inches" is VERY seldom heard. That is great penetration (as you would expect from a FMJ), but without knowing anything about the round, it could very well be completely meaningless. i.e. it would mean much more comming from a .38special than a S&W 500.

Some of the pictures you've found of the ballistics gel would be helpful as well.

I have seen 9mm and .45 acp ball deform on ballistics gel. Fired at normal velocity and I do consider 16 to 18" shallow considering some hollow pointsn expand and still get 16" Pictures on other websites not in person.

I will try to find websites with these photos.
