fmj penetrating power!!! video included

i saw that also its just where the roots are growing out and its a shadow between the two. ill do another video with better detail.. this video was just cell phone. i wouldnt doubt if you guys are right you all know more than me

Kudos for doing your own hands on experimenting, that's how you learn what your rifle is capable of. You might try shooting a pistol or other caliber rifle at the same tree for comparison. If they all go through then it might be the tree is hollow or rotted. If only the Mosin penetrates and a .223 or .30-30 failed to then you got some measure of relative POWER.

You discovered for sure that at least some of the trees in your are concealment and not cover when facing a full size rifle cartridge like the Mosin's 7.62x54R.

Sturdy FMJ rifle bullets can penetrate through a surprising amount of wood. I recall seeing a test where a Carcano rifle was fired into a solid piece of lumber. The bullet penetrated more than 2 feet (I can't remember the exact depth) and was in very good condition when recovered.

yes NWPilgrim tomorrow im going to compare that against a 7.62x39, 12ga slug, .223, 338 win mag, and 300 win mag... oh and the 30'06 but the 06 is so close to the 7.62x54r its no use wasting my bullets.. im the only 1 in the family with guns my old man dont hunt but he fishes and my brother and mom dont really want anything to do withem so im on my own lol

From the horrendous video it kinda looked like hickory bark.

Some wood is a heck of alot tougher than others.

I used to fell trees for a living and I would not be surprised if a bullet penetrated a solid poplar, but a solid hickory.... No way. Those darn things are like cutting into concrete.

But, that tree is hollow:(

Cut ya a 2 foot, solid log, then shoot it up and split it and find the bullets.

Wood... let's try 5/8" steel plate at 100 yards... .556 Cal, 855 penetrating rounds...

I do know for a fact that Romanian Light Ball 8MM Mauser will pass through a telephone pole at 100 yards. :D Atleast it passed through the Telephone Pole, I had my Target stapled to. :D

try it on dense, solid 1/16 steel plate and report your findings over in the pistol forums.

Nahh, never mind. I'm just evil.

While in the Marines our instructors took us out to the woods to show us what 5.56 and 7.62 rounds could do. We quickly learned that trees would afford us little in the way of cover.

The corollary to that theorem is that trees should not be used as a backstop because they don't reliably stop bullets.

I've shot many a holes clean through trees with the mosin. I saw a video of someone shoot through an engine block with one

Years ago when deer hunting one of the guys had an old Mauser and had an armor piercing round. We lined up a dozen huge trees and fired it and lost track of how many it went through. Scary.

I didn't watch the video, first few posts seem to cover it pretty well. But no one has ever questioned the pentrating ability of FMJ's and as for "power" they have the same as equal HP's or SP's. Not more, not less.

They just make use of that so called power very very poorly and shooting thru a tree or telephone pole means nothing. If anything it helps prove how bad they are. Put down the gun and back away slowly.

LK

Since these are battle rifles, that FMJ may well wound multiple enemy soldiers in its inefficient course and obviously will penetrate more cover to disable/kill hiding enemies than a HP or SP would be able to do.

Both expanding bullets and non-expanding bullets have their strong points and uses.
