new ammo still a solid defence?

I own a glock 23 and live in the mountains, I always carry in case of aggressive black bear or big cat and often I see something tempting to shoot (bunny, squirrel etc...) so I spend a round or two on it. however as I am always carrying 180 gr. speer gold dot or hornady critical defence this can get expensive. I don't want to simply stop firing every once in a while because A: it is fun and B: it helps me to stay in practice. so I have started carrying a less expencive round (Blazer 165 gr. fmj) I was just wondering what everyone thought about that, do you think it's still a solid enough defence? I have two 13 rd mags and always one in the chamber. all info and advice is appreciated thanks!

I carry a 9mm with similar intents. I believe the .40 is better but it is what it is for now. That being said I like a flat nose / truncated cone bullet for deep penetration in larger beings and modest damage on things to eat. They hit harder and cause more damage than ball ammo, out penetrate HP's and come at a relatively reasonable price.

These are my faves in 9mm:

I have fired these .40's at various targets at various ranges and was very impressed.

I carry a mag of cheap ball ammo when anticipating a plinking opportunity and have the space to carry it.

for bears, you need penetration to get through the layers of fat. i'd go with the highest velocity 180gr fmj i could find. speer lawman 180gr fmj is pretty snappy stuff.

there's a couple boutique ammo makers that offer a 200gr hard cast round, but i would not shoot that through a gun with an unsupported chamber such as your glock.

bear wear

Use a true metal jacketed bullet. I recommend Hornday.
Use Power Pistol or 3N37.
Use CCI500.
Use NEW sized CASES ONLY.

Cheep .40 S&W rounds

My 50 years of shooting and 40 years of reloading tells me to get
RANGE AMMO. in boxes of 50.
A MidwayUSA flier has them for $22.49 a box of 50 rounds...
