Fluted Cylinders?

Does anyone know when Colt started making the Partially Fluted cylinders?
Why did they go to partially fluted? Is it just for weight reduction?
Admittidly, the partial fluted cylinder looks better than the fully fluted cylinder but it likely has a pratical reason behind it also...
Thanks for any replies,

I don't know when Colt started doing it but this Bacon pocket revolver(top) was made in 1858. it's serial number 606 out of about 3,000

AFAIK the 1862 Pocket Police was the first half fluted model Colt made. As to the reason, I haven't the faintest idea. It may have just been an asthetic design thing.

Well as an asthetic thing, it sure worked! It set the stage for revolver design to this day.
I have always thought it was one of the best sculptured lines on any gun!
Thanks for the quick reply.
