Florida G license training

I have a question for a security officer or trainer in Florida.

I have a D license coming in a couple of weeks, and plan to take a G license course soon after. Do you have to qualify with the firearm that you plan to carry? If it's semi-auto, do you have to qualify on a semi-auto?

Also, concerning job prospects in South Florida, do employers prefer or require any particular type of firearm, short of the state restrictions on caliber? Do they require it to be double action or to have a manual safety? I have a Browning Hi-Power, Beretta 92G, Glock 17, and S&W model 10.

Do not take the G license training course until the security company you work for requests you do so.

Also, do not take the G training – there’s no point from an income standpoint; G guards make only a buck or two per hour over the Ds, in general Ds make more money than Gs depending on the site contract.

My advice, work your D, do well, get promoted to site supervisor and/or to a ‘plumb’ post whose contract pays the guards well.

That’s what I did.

I’ve held a Florida security license since 1990, a training license – DI - since 1994.

I doubt that's going to happen, because I work a full time job during the day, and plan to do this part time, nights or weekends.

I wasn't thinking so much of getting a return on my dollar for the G license, but more about a wider variety of opportunities. I'll admit that may not be the case either, as I don't know that much about the business.

That and since I carry more often than not anyway, it just seems weird to leave my gun in the car when working security.

Florida G License

To answer your question. Yes you will need to qualify with the firearm you will be carring. Some companies will only allow a revolver and some will allow you the choice of revolver or semi-auto. You can qualify with both to cover all options. You can carry a 357 revolver BUT it must be loaded with 38spl ammo. Your semi-auto choice is 9mm only. These are State of Florida Statutes. I personaly have qualified with both (just in case). FWIW the 2 bucks an hour extra for the G could add up at the end of the week/year. It's all up to you and your choice in the end.
As a added note- you will need to re-qualify once a year along with a 4 hr class to maintain the G. Proof must be submited to the state apon renewal.

Best Choice

We have contracts that are armed, you can not work it if you do not have a G Lic; so yes, do the G, with your Glock 17.
One spare magazine, plus small bright flash light just behind the mag pouch on your belt.

If a company is Revolver only? GO to an other one. Visual image is important in any Security position, comfort is as well, 10" Jump Boots in my world is a bit much, comfortable boots with pants over them, good polish is great, having said that I wear the sneakers that look like shoes, smart, and good for comfort.

With a G Lic; it gives you the choice, G or D. Part time only could mayhap give you a regular say Saturday night 12 hr shift, relief for someone who works a steady 5 or 6 shifts.

You get more "Yes Sir" with a new Glock on your belt than without.
