Anyone florida-based know how i would go about getting my CCW? Do i need a training class, and where would i find one? Roughly what is the cost?

Also, i'm interested in buying a handgun from a dealer in KY. Can i have it shipped to my house or do i need to ship it to a gun shop? Again, what should i expect to pay if i need to ship to a dealer?

How does this work?
You must be able to demonstrate competency with a firearm.

They just have me put a few rounds downrange?

And this training they mention, where can i find out more about it?
Get verification of training that satisfies the training requirement. The application lists acceptable documents. Make a photocopy to send with the application as an original cannot be returned. Persons serving in the United States Armed Forces may submit a copy of their Military ID Card to satisfy the training requirement.

Mantua, You have to take an NRA certified firearms training course unless you have military experience. I don't know if it has been amended since I got mine to include actually shooting a firearm but I didn't have to shoot anything. You must fill out the application and have it notarized. You must have a local law enforcement agency place your fingerprints onto the FP card supplied in the application kit. You must get a pair of passport photos to the specification listed in the kit (walgreens does this for 10 bucks).

You must enclose all necessary items including certificate of completion of firearms training course or DD214 (honorable discharge papers if the military route), fingerprint card, completed and notarized application, passport photos, and a check or money order for $117.00. Expect a 2 month turn around unless they offer a faster way now.

Also we offer transfers for 25 bucks plus 5 bucks for your background check. Call 813-237-4423 and ask for Chuck if interested in transferring or purchasing a firearm from an out of state FFL.

It doesn't have to be NRA certified, but many of the courses are NRA certified just because of their nature. Below is a cut and paste off of the state statue website. Basically complete a firearms safety course or military documents.

http://flsenate.gov/Statutes/index.....HTM&Title=->2004->Ch0790->Section 06#0790.06

1. Completion of any hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission or a similar agency of another state;

2. Completion of any National Rifle Association firearms safety or training course;

3. Completion of any firearms safety or training course or class available to the general public offered by a law enforcement, junior college, college, or private or public institution or organization or firearms training school, utilizing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association, Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, or the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services;

4. Completion of any law enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of law enforcement or security enforcement;

5. Presents evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition or military service;

6. Is licensed or has been licensed to carry a firearm in this state or a county or municipality of this state, unless such license has been revoked for cause; or

7. Completion of any firearms training or safety course or class conducted by a state-certified or National Rifle Association certified firearms instructor;

A photocopy of a certificate of completion of any of the courses or classes; or an affidavit from the instructor, school, club, organization, or group that conducted or taught said course or class attesting to the completion of the course or class by the applicant; or a copy of any document which shows completion of the course or class or evidences participation in firearms competition shall constitute evidence of qualification under this paragraph; any person who conducts a course pursuant to subparagraph 2., subparagraph 3., or subparagraph 7., or who, as an instructor, attests to the completion of such courses, must maintain records certifying that he or she observed the student safely handle and discharge the firearm;

I would presume that in Florida there are folks and companies

that will teach the class and meet the requirements for the state. What I would suggest is finding a company like the one I used here in S.C.

Not only do they teach you a NRA certified handgun safety class but also address the current laws in the State helping you pass the written test (don't know if Florida has one or not) give you the test, do the gun qualification (shooting) part as well as make sure you have filled out the form right (this is often the hardest part) do the finger printing and photo taking and then mail it all in for you...

In other words find someone or a somebodies that know and will walk you through the entire processs... folks here in Greenville S.C (Aero-Tech Inc.) do this for $85 and it takes a day. (Shameless Plug)

You're correct Blume. Most of all of the gun shows offer classes during the shows as well as many of the shooting ranges I've visited offer classes.

Awesome, i'm about to head to the Range to see if they offer a course. Thanks a ton for the links and advice here guys

Go to your local gun store. They will have the forms and probably can provide the training or recommend a good trainer. They may also be able to do the pix and fingerprinting, or tell you where to go for it.

If you get your fingerprints done 'electronically', the CWP will be less expensive and will probably have a quicker turn-around time.

I had my prints done the old-fashioned way, mailbox to mailbox took 60 days.

Since you live in Florida...you can do the electronic finger print thing

Oddly enough, if you apply for a non resident permit from Florida you can't do the electric finger print thingy.... even if you visit Florida. Bug in the system if you ask me.
