Trimmed and edited (GEM): 12-to-3 decision, by the Florida Court of Appeal for the First District, Florida Carry argued that the university had no authority to impose its ban on weapons in vehicles because the Florida Constitution gives all regulatory power over firearms to the Legislature.

“There are certain places where firearms can be legally prohibited,” Justice Roberts wrote. “But the Legislature has recognized that a citizen who is going to be in one of these places should be able to keep a firearm securely encased within his or her vehicle.”

Oh, the horror. I'm sure the faculty are going to be upset for the most part.

After all, we all know that anyone who brings a firearm onto a educational institution's campus must be up to no good...

Small victory, but a victory for sure. Now...if only more states would allow campus carry.

I'm a Florida native and about 45 minutes from UNF. Reaction to the public has largely been positive. There have been some who say they support the right but are afraid now that any vehicle can have a car gun in it and the usual "nobody needs" guns people, but it seems the majority of the people are happy with it.

If you're in Florida, consider joining Florida Carry. They fought for this case.

Recent trip....

I was in PA a few weeks ago & CCed/OCed my M&P Compact .45acp.
I asked about having it on a few PA university locations(IUP & CUP/Clarion).
I checked a few websites & found that PA has no real restrictions on firearms or CC license holders. :D

The "bar talk" & "my neighbor's son's barber's cousin's" advice doesn't pass muster. ;)

It'd be nice & refreshing if people went by the law & not what they think is the law.

Good for you Florida,,,

Here in Oklahoma we (licensed carriers) are allowed to have our guns in our car,,,
This was a result of a law suit brought against Conoco Corp,,,
They fired several people for having guns in their car,,,
Even though the people had carry permits.

This prompted a change in the state law,,,
It specifically allows people with a carry permit,,,
To drive onto campus and leave their guns in their car,,,
And prohibits any company from taking action against an employee.

The Oklahoma legislators took the stance,,,
That there was no compelling reason to deny a person,,,
The ability to defend themselves on their way to their workplace.

Which is what the previous laws did.

Conoco Corp. tried to use the,,,
"It's our private property and we can make any rule we want." argument.

Fortunately for we Oklahoma citizens our legislators decided that the inside of our vehicles is our private property as well.

As long as the gun never leaves the car a licensed carrier is within the law,,,
That gets a bit sticky because technically you can't put it in the trunk of your car.

What one must do is either trust that the glove compartment will be secure enough,,,
Or do as I did and buy a locking box that cables to the car seat frame,,,
It's a bit of a pain in the tuchus but easily doable.

Just recently (within the last 2-3 years) we won another campus right,,,
Licensed carriers can now leave their guns in their cars,,,
At Oklahoma Career Tech campuses (Vo-Tech Schools) ,,,
Not at regular academic school campuses though.

The reasoning behind that law is that a substantial part of Career Tech students,,,
Are adults taking classes to upgrade or attain new vocational skills,,,
The same "the gun can't leave the car" rule applies.

I'm very pleased to see that the Florida legislators,,,
Have legalized this for their citizens.
