flitz for cleaning bore

not sure why i thought about it,but when you see someone state the bore is dark or is frosty---could you use flitz polishing cream in bore?

its not that i need to use it that way but was just wondering?

It is a light abrasive. You will be removing metal if you use it. It isn't what most folks would consider proper for using in the bore.

FWIW, I once knew a fellow who cleaned the copper wash out of his rifle barrels with Gleem toothpaste, a very mild abrasive. I don't know what he is using now that Gleem is off the market.

I've used Flitz in the barrel of every centerfire rifle and handgun I own. I run a patch with Flitz through before each cleaning.

I've also been known to polish a new bore with it just to smooth it out some.

After polishing hardened steel with it in the past I've come to the conclusion that you would have to polish for quite some time before you actually removed any significant amount of material.

In fact, you can use it on a blued steel surface and it won't remove the bluing as long as you're reasonable with it. Works great for removing light surface rust on a blued barrel.

I have used flitz to clean barrels out before. I prefer using other compounds. I have spun 4140 steel and several stainless steels on a lathe and polished the rods using flitz. Total metal removed was under .0001 of an inch. So polishing a bore with it if fine. I would not worry unless you are using 180 grit compound all the time. have fun.
