I have a KelTec P32 coming. I am thinking of using a flat point, FMJ, 71g round made by FN for self defense. Anyone have any thoughts on this round for self defense? (I do not want to use a hollowpoint for fear of insufficient penetration). If anyone has shot this out of thier P11, how did it shoot? Thanks all.

Regards,
Frank

I wouldn't use that FN round for three reasons:

1)weak load
2)can't be ejected if a dud (too big)
3)has very hard primers which may require #2

Thanks Oleg. Any thoughts on the Aquilla 32 acp for self defense? How about the Fiocchi 32 or S&B 32 re: reliability, hotness, self defense use?

Frank

Well said, Oleg. I'd add:

4. The rounds (FN) are about 20 years old and who knows where and how they've been stored over those years.

I use the FNs for practice and the S&B for carry. (And yes, I practice with the S&B too...)

I've heard good things about the Fiocci but have yet to find any around where I live.

Enjoy your P-32.

CindyH put 45 rounds of Fiocchi 73gr ball through her PPK/s on Sunday with zero problems. She picked up some American Eagle ball afterwards and will test it next weekend.

With a relatively small, slow cartridge like .32, I'd say stick with round-nose FMJ.

I use Fiochhi ball for all of my shooting. I have also used S&B with no problems, though S&B is a little dirty. I had numerous light strikes on FN ammo (5% at least, re-strike would fire 90% of those) in the P32.

I buy Fiochhi ammo at http://www.ammoman.com

Oleg,
What do you think about .32 cal Hydra-Shok's? Would you still choose the 73gr. Fiocchi FMJ over that ammo? I just have a little trouble choosing FMJ over HP. But I'd welcome your opinion.

Winchester Silvertips are the standard for most of the pocket 32s. That's what I carry!

The long OAL and profile, as Oleg said, contribute to feeding problems. That said, I only had one light strike in the last 150 rounds through my P-32, and no failures to feed. Manually ejecting the round is difficult, though, and usually I have to push the cartridge down through the mag well.

I do not see any reason to use JHPs in small calibers. Over-penetration isn't a problem, under-penetration is. That is why I like heavier bullets for pistol ammo, too. P32 will feed any JHP that I tried (Winchester, Federal) but I don't think there's any advantage to using them.
