November 2000
Dear Florida gun owner:
There are several men who are striving to represent you in the
United States Senate next year.
Some are extremely pro-gun. Others want you to think they're
pro-gun. And still others are trying to leave you in the dark.
Here's the official rating for your U.S. Senate candidates:
Bill McCollum (R) D--
Bill Nelson (D) NR (No Response)
Joel Deckard (RF) B--
Andy Martin (I) A
Darrell McCormick (I) A
GOA is currently mailing its ratings to Florida members. If you
have recently received The Gun Owners newsletter from GOA, you will
notice that the "D--" grade listed above for Rep. Bill McCollum is
lower than the grade that appeared in the newsletter.
That is because Rep. McCollum's grade from 1998 was erroneously
inserted in this year's newsletter rating.
I am sorry to report that McCollum's record took a turn for the
worse during the last Congress, as he supported much of the Clinton
agenda, including gun registration, gun bans and more.
(Please go to http://www.gunowners.org/sflmccfs.htm on the GOA
website to see the Fact Sheet, "Will the Real Bill McCollum Please
Stand Up.")
It is astonishing to me that Rep. McCollum even voted against the
right of citizens to defend themselves.
The people in our nation's capital have suffered under the most
draconian gun laws in the entire country. They cannot legally own a
firearm for self-defense.
Not surprisingly, residents of the District now suffer under some of
the worst crime conditions in the United States.
Well, Rep. McCollum was forced to vote on whether to repeal this
unconstitutional gun ban during the most recent Congress.
Incredibly, Bill McCollum voted AGAINST repealing the D.C. gun ban!!
That's right. McCollum voted to keep a 20-year gun ban in place,
thus denying honest citizens of this country the means to defend
themselves and their families. (Source: Congressional Record,
6/18/99, p. H4641.)
Thankfully, there are candidates that are solidly pro-gun in
Florida. Andy Martin and Darrell McCormick have answered the GOA
candidate survey in complete support of gun owners' rights.
Obviously, the best thing for us would be if ALL the candidates
supported the right to keep and bear arms. So please contact
Democrat Bill Nelson and Republican Bill McCollum. Let them know
that they need to be more responsive to those who value their gun
rights.
And let's not forget our friends either. Please contact Martin and
McCormick and thank them for their strong support of our
constitutional guarantees. I have included the candidates and their
grades below. You can reach the candidates at the following
numbers:
Bill McCollum (D--) Ph: 407-422-8683 Fax: 407-422-8682
Bill Nelson (NR) Ph: 850-222-8777 Fax: 850-222-7653
Joel Deckard (B--) Ph: 904-880-4684 Fax: 815-346-0772
Andy Martin (A) Ph: 888-320-andy Fax: 888-769-andy
Darrell McCormick (A) Ph: 352-336-9114 no fax provided
Sincerely,
Larry Pratt
Executive Director
P.S. Tell Bill McCollum and Bill Nelson to start standing for the
2nd Amendment! And thank Andy Martin and Darrel McCormick for
supporting your gun rights.
