No guns involved, but, you have to wonder at what Brand X pepper spray the crook was using. The broom handle appears to be 150 cal. ;)

Cops hunt broom-beaten would-be robber

Police hunted Monday for a would-be robber in his 20s who fled empty-handed after a 71-year-old Lauderdale Lakes convenience store clerk fended him off with a broom last week, Broward Sheriff's Office spokesman Kirk Englehardt said.

The incident occurred about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when the culprit entered the Mobil gas station at 3100 W. Oakland Park Blvd., picked up a pack of chewing gum and took it to the counter. While pretending to pull change out of his pocket, he told the clerk, Therman Gause, to ``look here,'' and then shot pepper spray into Gause's face, Englehardt said.

Despite the spray, Gause grabbed a broom, walked around the counter and confronted his attacker in what Englehardt described as ``an old-West-style face-off.''

After continuing to spray Gause, the attacker walked behind the counter and tried to grab money from the open cash drawer. Gause, however, slammed it shut.

The two continued to struggle, Gause was thrown to the floor, and the would-be robber ran away without any money, Englehardt said.

Investigators asked anyone with information about the robbery attempt or the attacker to call Broward CrimeStoppers at 493-8477.

Mr. Gause be tougher n a junkyard dawg. Good on him.

Sam..knew a guard dog that ate pepper spray can, fence jumper left tatters of clothes and can behind, dog had no comment.

From the story, this sounds like it happened not to far from me.

Amazing that I wasn't in the middle of this, isn't it?

FUD, Are you down there in good old Fort Likkerdale?

Man I grew up there long ago. So long ago that the Coast Guard station was still on the south beach across where the marina is now.
All the hotels on the beachand the shops and restuarants on Las Olas used to close in the winter. You could fire a cannon down Las Olas Blvd. in the summer and not hit anything.

We first lived in Wilton Manors, near the creek. In our first house my dad moved a rain barrel and a coral snake slithered out. We were hopping and jumping all aver the back yard avoiding him until my uncle got a machete and started chopping him up.

It was the best place in the world for a young boy to grow up. We'd get out of school for the summer and take off our shoes and shirts and not put them back on unless we had to go out to eat or go back to school. I had an airboat and a johnboat before I could drive a car. In fact I drove a swamp buggy before I drove a car. One of my dad's friends was an old Florida cracker/Everglades type and I got to meet a lot of the Indians like Billy Tiger and Johnny Osceola and spend some time up in Big Cypress too.

Man I remember mornings where there were so many birds coming off the glades that they almost blocked the sun. I caught baby tarpon in New River on light tackle that I had to fight for 45 minutes or more. In fact there was a spot on the river that was called Tarpon Bend.

Oh well. So many people now. All those concrete anthills on the beach they call condos - yuuck.

I used to go shooting a lot out near Conservation Area III and there was a great spot at the west end of Broward Blvd, near a Rock Pit that we shot at until the Mid 70's.

regards and enjoy. Go to the Everglades - way back in. You'll love it. Especially in the late winter, early spring.
