Fixing Flecks/Discoloration in Blueing

I've got a 870 that was a long-time safe queen. It has flecks/discoloration in the blueing on the receiver, but no pitting. They literally looks like freckles. Is there a DIY way to clean this up or minimize appearance with out re-blueing it? Thanks!

Try wiping them with a patch or cloth soaked in break-free. It could be as simple as brass dings from the base of a shell bouncing off your receiver. "Freckels" tells me it's most likely a fleck of rust starting.

On the other hand, guns are meant to be used. Shotguns in particular live hard lives. If you have to get it reblued every 20 years or so, It's not too bad.

Thanks. I should have given some more info. I did try break-free and they were still there. I assumed the freckles was first stages of rust, but I was hoping that since there was no pitting yet I might have an option other than reblueing.

That is the kind of thing cold blue works well on. Clean the surface well, using a grease remover, then swab on the cold blue. Warming the receiver will help also and note I said "warm", not hot. (I like G96 cold blue paste, but any good cold blue will do.)
