Fixed or Variable scope for 200 - 500 yds?

I plan on shooting .308 (target shooting) and would like to know which type of scope would be of better use?
I have looked at the Leupold Vari-x line and the fixed powers as well.

Is 16x too much for a fixed power? I plan to use a mil-dot reticle.

Thanks.

For punching paper . . .

get the 4-14x40 or the 3.5-10 VariX-III for informal target shooting.

But if you are doing benchrest, then a 36x will help you on positioning, but don't expect to hit moving targets with it.

I use 10x from 100 - 1000 yards on 6ft iron maidens. I can range pretty well with the mil-dots, but I can't read wind for ****. :D
