Fixed or Variable Power for AR10T?

Leupold it is but I would like to hear some feedback comparing the fixed Mark 4 M1-16x40mm and the Vari III 8.5-25x40mm.
I'd get the 3/4"-Mil dot on the Mark 4 but would stay with the Duplex on the Vari III.

IMHO if you are going to get a variable w/MILDOT then the only choice out there is the Springfield Gen III. Springfield has the MILDOTs on the correct focal plane for a variable (i.e. when you increase/decrease the powder the dots get bigger/smaller) allowing them to subtend correctly at any power setting.

If you are going to go with a fixed power I personally like the Mark4 M1 10x which is enough for most shooting situations.

If you want a high magnification variable I would not get MILDOTS (other then the Springfield) due to the fact that they need to be on a certain power setting to subtend correctly. If they are not you will not get the correct outcome of the formula which will result in an incorrect range and a possible miss/wound. Then you have to take into consideration that if you move the power setting to range you then have to deside what to do after you get the range.... crank up the power?... takes more time.

Again, just my humble opinion.

M Gruber,

The AR10T is a great gun! I just fired one for the first time a week or so ago - now it's on my short list for future purchase.

16X is a LOT of magnification. Field of view is limited which means target acquisition can be tricky.

10X is used by snipers out to 1000 yards with the .308 (Leupold Mark 4 M1 10x40). 10X also allows easier target acquisition at closer ranges like 100 yards.

hummmmmmm

Can't wait to play with the 10T!

I agree 16X is a lot of magnification.
I might just have to suck it up and get both the 10x and the 16X. Have a few other flat tops that would gladly welcome a Mark 4 on em'.
Slappin' a pie plate at a 1000....can't wait to get some time on the gun.

Thanks for the input.

If you're already spending that much on a scope, get a Nightforce NXS. Better quality, awesome optics. go to snipercountry.com and read the review. The guy hammered nails with the scope, and it was in perfect condition after (except for the finish).

As to fixed or var, depends on type of shooting. Tactical LE-style is better served with a var scope, while military shooting (from longer range) is OK with fixed.

I don't like the cheap adjustments (feel) on the Springfield or the Tasco. I like PERFECT repeatability on adjustments. Will the scope shoot boxes? The NXS does perfectly. The 3rdgen Springfield I (very briefly) had did not. The Leupold Tactical I had was ok, but not quite as good as the NXS. The Tasco, ?????

How fine are the adjustments? It isn't easy getting precision out of a scope that doesn't have at least 1/4min adjustments. A friend has a Leupold sniper scope that has some ugly elevation adjustments....I think it was like 1moa/click.

Just my opinion, but I think that the Leupolds are overpriced and over-rated. Used to be cutting-edge, but are simply not the best out there anymore.

NXS

Besides doubling as a hammer, why is it better quality than Leupold?
I've never heard of NXS....
anyone else?
