Five Slain at NYC Restaurant

By GEORGE WATSON Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - Police fanned out across New York City today in a search for two men who walked into a Wendy's restaurant at closing time and fatally shot five employees during an apparent robbery. Two other workers were wounded, one critically.

Police responding to a robbery call early today saw the wounded workers upstairs and broke through the locked glass door to help them, Chief of Detectives William Allee said at a news conference.

The other five were found in a basement walk-in refrigerator, their hands bound behind their backs and their mouths taped shut. All but one died at the restaurant in the Flushing section of Queens. The fifth died soon after arriving at a hospital.

``We believe the motive was robbery,'' Allee said, describing the suspects as two men ages 18 to 20.

The Wendy's is not far from Shea Stadium, home to baseball's New York Mets, and the USTA National Tennis Center, site of the U.S. Open tennis tournament.

Police said the gunmen entered the restaurant just before its scheduled closing time of 11 p.m. Wednesday. One of the survivors was able to call police about two hours later.

One of the survivors was in critical condition, Allee said. The other was in stable condition, said Paul Pickard, a spokesman for New York Hospital Medical Center.

The murder rate in New York City has risen 12.4 percent in the first three months of this year after plunging recently to levels not seen since the 1960s. There were 667 murders last year, a dramatic decline since the city's all-time high of 2,290 in 1990.

Shootings by police officers have grabbed recent headlines in New York and mass killings in the densely populated metropolis are relatively rare. In 1995, a man opened fire in a Bronx shoe store, killing five. Two weeks earlier, a gunman angered by an eviction dispute opened fire at a Harlem store before setting it ablaze. Seven people and the gunman died.

Near the Wendy's early today, Shahzad Ahmad, a cab driver who often works in the neighborhood, said the block is usually crowded with people and police at night.

``That's just unbelievable,'' he said. An employee at a 24-hour newsstand directly across the street from the restaurant said he didn't see or hear anything out of the ordinary.

The nation's deadliest shooting happened at a fast-food restaurant in 1984, when a man walked into a McDonald's in San Ysidro, Calif., and began shooting. He killed 21 people before he was shot by police.

Wendy's, the No. 3 fast-food chain after McDonald's and Burger King, is based in Dublin, Ohio. The chain has approximately 5,500 stores worldwide, 4,600 of them in the United States.

Interesting contrast - the day before in NY a shop keeper defended herself with a gun.

Today, all these folk die.

In Wal-Mart, sheep bah baaaaaaaaaaah
as someone stops a knife wielder.

Sad commentary on the sheep. They get what they deserve.

Too bad no one in the Wendy's was armed and able to defend themselves. Oh that's right handguns are illegal in NYC.

"As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression.
In both instances there is a twilight when everything remains
seemingly unchanged. And it is in such twilight that we all
must be most aware of change in the air - however slight -
lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness."
--Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas

What a terrible incident. I don't even want to imagine what the victims must have gone through in their last moments or what their families are going through now. The victims were as sheep herded into a slaughter pen by demagogic politicians.

Five more lives lost, two forever changed, thanks to gun control.

If the victims had another chance, would they choose 911 or a 1911?

Do you think the perps would have been so bold if they thought there was reasonable chance that one of the employees may have been armed?

Thank you, Bill Clinton and the rest of the social elite for yet another blinding example of the effectiveness of gun control.

<sarcasm>

Well, this should be fairly easy to solve. Since everyone in NYC has to have a license to own a handgun, and each gun itself is tied to a particular licensee, they should simply look up who owns whatever type of gun was used and go pick up the bad guys.

Charles Schumer, and every other politician responsible for using the power of government to intimidate the people into forgoing their right to self-defense, is a murderer. Nearly as responsible for this crime as those who pulled the trigger.

Gee. I thought the Sullivan Act ended this kind of violence a couple of generations ago in New York.

As Buck sings it, "I wouldn't live in New York City if they gave me the whole damn town."

New York makes my sojourn in the PRK seem bearable.

Interesting how two high profile shootings of late have happened in areas where handguns are already banned or severly restricted. More evidence that the bad guys will never follow the rules. But you can't reason with an anti with logic and facts.

This is a tragedy.

What I find interesting about this is that the anti-self defense activists, and the media, won't hammer this story. I'll wager this gets relatively little 'play' in the press. Why? Because the murderers were obviously criminals, executing innocent people over money.

Now, isn't it fascinating that if you murder people, even a large number of people for money, that that doesn't bring strong calls for gun control? Why? Because it is obvious to everyone that these animals were criminals. Criminals. Just like the criminals that shoot up schools, churches, day care centers and other gatherings of innocents, but ... without a financial motive.

I guess crimes like this just don't work as well when you are trying to use dead, innocent people to infringe upon fundamental rights. Ooops ... did I say that?

Stories like this illustrate why I carry, even though it makes me an instant felon. You see, I'm not "allowed" to carry a firearm in my state for protection (Nor am I allowed to do so when I travel across the U.S.). So I do it anyway. So, am I a "law-abiding citizen" or not? And what made me a felon? Why, the stroke of a pen, sir.

I think I know what these poor soles were thinking in their last moments,- I wish I had a gun.- I know the anti-gun politicans like Kennedy, Schumer, Feinstein all have armed body guards.

Dennis Olson- I respect your courage to do the right thing!

Was the guy already convicted of armed robbery more than once?
Flame away folks but if I had been in his shoes (here in VA) the second time would have put me away until I was a little old jeffer. With that the murders would never have happened. Got to agree with the NRA, some politicians do have blood on their hands. I think they like it.

The way things work in NYC, where I grew up, it is pretty much a given, that the law abiding citizen CANNOT LEGALLY ACQUIRE AND OR POSSESS A HANDGUN.

Unfortunately, these restrictions seem NOT to apply to criminal types, and therefore we have incidents such as are the subject of this discussion.

Until the law and or procedures ala NYC are changed, the existing situation will remain, as it is, criminals are armed, the law abiding aren't. As for the police, they are there "to protect society", whatever that might mean in ENGLISH.

As far as Politicos with blood on their hands I am reminded of The Manchurian Candidate . The kid was supposed to shoot the guy running for Pres . and the V.P. hopeful ( Commie ) was to hold the body and tearfully ask for the Pres. nomination .
It's like catch and release guarantees fish next year . Catch and release or do not catch at all , guarantees issues for the next election .
