I have just purchased a Smith and Wesson 629 Magna classic .44 with a 7 1/2" barrel. It does not have 3 holes drilled in the top strap above the cylinder. The barrel looks like it might be designed for a clamp type scope mount, but I haven't had any luck locating one. I would like to avoid drilling the frame if possible, but I can't see well enough to shoot accurately without magnification. Please advise me as to the best course of action. Thanks!

B-Square makes a mount that uses the holes that you'll see when you remove your rear sight. That mount also uses aluminum clamps, as a safety feature. Don't overtighten the screws for the clamps, or the clamps will break. The only purpose of the clamps is to keep the scope from striking you about the face and head, should the screws loosen/fail.
Nope. Wish I could be of more help. I'm using that B-Square mount on an old mod 29 that was made prior to the drilling and tapping for the mounts on that series. I'm surprised that your 629 wasn't either drilled and tapped or that the mounts that use the holes under the rear sight won't work. That does leave you in a lurch!

Unfortunately, they tell me this mount (B-Square # 42401) will not fit "classics". That means I'm trading for a performance center s&w, or drilling the top strap. S&W says they can drill the necessary holes "blind", so they dont show when the cylinder is open for $80 + shipping. I really wish I had known this when I bought it...
Just got back to this thread. That's sad news. The ad I linked claims to be for a "classic" with the B-Square mount. The mounts I'm looking @ on B-Square's website are 42405 and 42406. For S&Ws without pre-drilled mounting holes, (pre '93) the rear sight is removed and the hole(s) left by the sight's removal secure the mount.
Edit: Sent an e-mail to Brownell's Tech Dept. They say that their B-Square mount # 122-200-010 will fit, as long as the barrel is 5 1/2" or longer. Seems to me it'd be cheaper to try the mount, as you can always send it back to Brownell's.

Here's a warning: If your mount has the "fingers" on each side that grip the barrel, just be aware that they're just there for safety purposes, to keep the mount from flying back in your face, should the screw(s) break that actually affix the mount to the frame. The fingers are lightweight aluminum and will break if you tighten them very much.

The B-Square scope mount worked great for years. Had to re-tighten it once. But eons later wen I wanted to go back to the rear sight, I could not find the assembly. All the places I have checked are out of stock for a pre 94. Also there are several listed as .160, .146 & .136. Not sure which one would be correct. I took the scope off and put a laser on it for now. At an indoor range the 10 5/8 barrel makes it very easy to hit what your aiming at. But still would like to place a regular rear sight back on it.
