I took my newly acquired SW m42 to the range the other day. It is a handful! Shooting 50 rounds of 158 LRN Magtech it bucked pretty hard.
Having read every post I could find here about these little rascals I was prepared for a tussle. My hand was sore for two days afterwards.
I was more accurate than I expected to be at both 10 and 7 yards. That was a pleasant surprise. The biggest part for me was learning how short the front site is. I kept wanting to see more of the blade and everytime I did my shots went high. After I adjusted to the small site picture I stayed mostly in the nine-ring.
Another help was staging the trigger. I have mixed feelings about this as to whether its a safe practice from a personal defense standpoint. But I think it may be useful in helping me gain confidence with the gun. The fact is I plan to learn to shoot it one-handedly where I look, and I will pull the trigger smoothly through once I start that training process.
I'd like to thank everyone here who has posted so much useful info about these tricky little guns. The background reading I did helped me to buy it and certainly helped me to have a positive experience on my inital range trip.
BTW I'm in awe of anyone who can fire off a succession of .357s through one of these. I'd hang on to an exploding cherry bomb or a crackling string of Black Cats before I'd try a run of .357s. Glad mine's a .38 only.
Oh, and it is sooo pretty. It's apprently one of the early 42s. It gleams like a piece of obsidian. I know it's the "wrong" choice for a sweaty pocket gun. I'll just keep it well oiled. So iIf you see a guy coming at you with a greasy right front pocket, you'll know it just me keeping the rust off my black baby.
