Fishing firearm

I was out trolling for Wipers and Walleye on Thursday, and I realized my Sig 239 was a (literal) pain in the butt on the boat---Sooo I bought a Ruger SP 101 and I am going to shoot it tomorrow with some OLD 38 plus P that I have.
NOW my question--for those of you who may use and fire the Ruger SP 101; What is a good diet of carry ammo for this revolver? It will be primarily CC on-board or in the tackle boxes.

' Love my 101, but for me anyway, a little to0 heavy and bulky for on-bod cary in boat. Tackle box, yea. If wanting to carry with .357s I like the Federal or Gold Dot 125 JHPs. 38+P by same folks for quicker shot recovery. Don't forget a 10-pack of CCI shot loads for the water mocs.

I know there are people who will object, but my SP is loaded with 125gr Gold Dot .357 and a max dose of W231.
Now for wipers, walleye and carp I might go with a 148gr HBWC 38spcl and 2.7gr of Bullseye.:D

I prefer 125gr sjhp, brand - Winchester, Federal, or Remington - whatever is availabe. The 101 will handle full power loads with no problem. I did change the grips to Uncle Mike's boot grips (the short one) and I like the way these grips handle recoil. Also, with these grips, the gun fits in the front pocket of my jeans in a pocket holster.
The 101 is one of my all time favorite guns. I also have a service six snubby that I love.

Never had any dealings with that type fish, but moderate .38 loads are adequate to stop any freshwater fish in Texas.;)

A Greener Light Harpoon Gun.....;)

When fishing, I generally carry a S&W 331 (titanium revo in .32 mag) in Thunderwear. So comfortable I forget I have it on. Now, if you really need to shoot a fish (alligator gar is a good example), I would recommend a 317 in .22 lr.

My fishing firearm is always a .44 mag. Of course, I have to compete with other fisherman.

You know... the kind of "fisherman" who fish with their 4 inch claws and weigh more than 500 pounds. ;)

I would imagine a 125 grain JHP from a hot .357 shot near a fish would cause enough shockwave to float it, akin to using dynamite. ;)

"Stand by to repel boarders"!!

I have lost fish in both MT and WY to those long clawed fisherbears. HOWEVER: I do not use the pistol as a fishing instrument, I carry it to repel boarders. Thanks for the ammo info-- I shot 25 rounds of 38 spl and enjoyed it, then I shot 5 rounds of 357 mag w/ 158 grain bullet and I DID NOT enjoy that. Perhaps the lighter bullet would be more comfortable.

A word of caution regarding guns on board fishing boats. Some years ago when I lived on Key West we used to fish for all manner of creatures, inclduding sharks. One day, a "friend" new to guns brought his new .357 mag along. Well eventually we hauled up this awfully mean shark, about 6 feet of him, that set about thrashing and snapping at every thing aboard the 22 ft Boston Whaler. We usually use a bat to subdue, but the gun totin' guy whips out the .357 and plug sthe shark, and you guessed it, in the excitement he forgot there was a BOAT deck under the beast. .357 bullets have way on continuing travel after they pass through sharks, and this one did, right through the deck and the hull and into Davey Jones Locker. Fortunately we were on the flats, close to shore, and beached the boat and were able to patch it with resin and patches.
The moral of this story is "be sure of your target AND what's behind it"

I carry my Taurus M85UL with 3 shot shells and 2 Hydrashocks at my property. I fish, hunt and goof around out there. Snakes are my main concern. I'm also leary of trespassers and feral dogs. All together 6 of us own 200+ acres with a 33 acre pond. My piece backs up to a 400 acre National forest, we get a lot of poachers.

Also, carry an extra speedloader with Hydra's.

Was carrying a Buckmark 22, to long. Will though in tackle box for varmit, but I wear the 38

High Point 9m/m- LOL

if it works, spray and pray. And if you happen to drop it over
board; no problem, spend $79 bucks and get another one.:D
