Hello,
I don't know if anyone remembers all my questioning,
but after severals posts on rifles/scopes/bases/rings/etc
I finally made decisions in all the above catagories,
put the whole thing together and made it to the range.
The rifle I decided on was the remington LTR in .308
which I got from Hoplite in either kentucky or tennessee.
They had an advertisement in the shotgun news with
LTRs for $750 and PSSs for $700 ($730 for 300 win mag
IIRC). Anyway, that went well and I had it delivered to
a local guy for $20. He was shocked that I could find
it. I didn't think shotgun news was a great secret, oh
well. I gave him the add in case he wanted to stock
these rifles in the future, he seemed appreciative.
Next, I took a mild gamble and ordered the tasco SS from
riflescopes.com (SWFA?) for $300. I ordered the 10x.
I say mild gamble in that most everything I had heard
was positive except for a couple folks. I got the
obligatory butler creek flip-ups and a mildot master.
Finally, I got leupold dual-dovetail bases and burris
signature rings with the synthetic inserts. Those
totalled about $75 or so I think. I installed all this
myself, even though it made me quite nervous and I
halfway expected not to be able to hit a damn thing.
I did a very crude boresight with a piece of tape on the
wall and looked at it through the bore.
To the range: I shot federal gold match 168g .308, 20
rounds. Basically, I did a fire 5, clean, repeat.
I used sweets 7.62 to clean it (it had been cleaned
before any shots as I had heard some rifles had some
shavings in the barrel upon leaving the factory).
I also used mpro7 after the sweets. It took a few shots
to get it on at 25yds (ironically I think it went back
to where it started from, which means my boresighting
was pitiful). Similarly for 50yds. At 100, my first
two shots were about .4moa. I was shocked. I really
didn't think I could do much of anything, and to have
overlapping holes was amazing. For shooting, I just
laid the forend on some blocks of wood with carpet on
them (already at the range for that purpose), and had
a towel bunched up in the back, although they butt wasn't
really resting totally on it. After getting it sighted in
I shot from someone's elses sandbags for a group. I
got a 5-shot group of about .6-.65moa. I almost fell out.
The guy said once I get the trigger lower, that could get
even better. He estimated the trigger was at about 6lbs.
I liked it...until he let me try his. Needless to say,
I shot his by accident it was so light. I think he said
it was a pound or so. Next time I'm out there, he and I
plan to set mine to about 3lbs or so (actually I'll be
observing while he does the work).
All in all, I'm quite amazed with this rifle. It made
it seem like I can actually shoot...quite the ego boost.
Next time I might venture out to 200yds as well as try
an 'official' position (need to get a shooting mat).
I appreciate all the advice I got from the forum, especially
el rojo who convinced me mounting the scope wasn't
rocket science. I think the burris rings also helped as I
did not want to lap rings and they kind of self-adjust
anyway, which likely saves time.
My next gun will be something in 26in, either a police or
a stealth or maybe an SSG (on sale for $1000 in the shotgun
news...$1600 with a swaroski(sp?) 6x scope).
Either way, this scoped-rifle business is a blast, pardon
the pun. As an aside, I shot my bushmaster with iron
sights also and I'm hating iron sights now. So instead
of an m1a or FAL, I might get another bolt gun...and trade
the 20" basic bushmaster for a m4 flattop and put either
a dot-sight or a scope on it.
Thanks again...
Howard
