First time with a .45, first time with a 1911.

I went down to my local gun range this weekend and squeezed of 100 rounds of .45 ACP. I’d only shot .38 and 9mm before so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I loaded a Colt 1911 with a single round and braced myself for a huge recoil, and an ear splitting bang. Much to my surprise there was very little difference between firing the .45 and the 9mm. I didn’t detect a significant increase in noise, and the difference in recoil was almost negligible. The mussel flip was a little higher, but nothing that I couldn’t get use to. More importantly I shot as well with .45 as I do with 9mm. Needless to say, I think I just found my next defense caliber.

This was also my first time with a 1911 style gun, (I’ve shot a S&W revolver, Glock, and Ruger in the past), and I must admit I really did like the gun. No SA/DA transition problems, no long trigger pulls, just de-activate the safety and it's’7 rounds of SA bliss! I’ve got a Beretta 92 for home defense, but I may have Kimber 1911 in that role in a few months!

I just wanted to let anyone who as been using 9mm know, that if they been avoiding the .45 because they think it would be too powerful for them, to give it a try. You might be pleasantly surprised, I know I was.

Man dem .45 cartridges are big!

F.Y.I. I fired 50 rounds of UMC and 50 rounds of Speer Lawmen both in 230 grains.

And then after you have shot .45ACP for awhile, you should try .45 Super...

Be careful Slartibardfast, 1911's can be very addicting! If you want a great discussion forum for 1911's, visit www.1911forum.com . TFL is great for all handguns, but that forum kicks for 1911's. Anyway, the .45 is a GREAT defensive caliber. May you have a lifetime of enjoyment out of your Colt.

I had a similar experience a month or so ago. I now own a SA 1911 and it is my favorite gun. Get one soon.

My first gun was a 1911, welcome to the fold Slartibardfast.

There is ... nothing like a single stack 1911 type. Great Big Bullets! Shoot all day.

Slartibardfast, now you too can say, "Well, I can't exactly explain it, you'll just have to shoot one to understand." But, I love 'em. No, the truth is, it's lust.

'Funny, the 9 mm, .40 S&W and 10 mm crazes and high capacity solution looking for a problem just never got to some of us.

The only reason I'd shoot a 9 mm is because I'd own an advanced John Browning design, as in High Power. That's reason enough.

John Browning and Paul Mauser had their "stuff" in a tight little pile, if you get my meaning.

You only got to shoot them once and the addiction sets in. Got my 1991A1 in january and love it. Went to the range today for the first serious shooting with it. With some 200 grain LSWC"s pushed by 4.6 grains of Titegroup ragged 1" moa at 7 yrds 2" moa at 15 yrds and 3.5" at 25 yrds. Must have got lucky because I never shot like this with my G17 or Tuaris 357. I love this gun and caliber. Good thing I was at a outside range and no one there becuase they would have thought I was nuts wowing myself. Your hooked and I don"t think there is a treatment program for 1911itis. Good luck and have fun.

Racer, all you need now is a Videcki trigger and adjustable sights on that 1991 and you'll really be wowing yourself :p

I had a similar experience. My first gun was a .22LR pistol. I then moved up to a 9mm and there was a big difference in kick. After a while I got use to the 9mm where I could accurately shoot it with one hand but I was intimated by the size of a .45ACP because the 9mm was mid-way in size between a .22LR and a 45ASCP (.45 - .355 = close to .22) so I was expecting a pretty big kick and avoided 45's for a long time. I then bought my first 1911 (a Para-Ordnance P14-45) and discovered that (being a bigger gun with a larger grip) it kicks less than my Kahr MK9.

Looks like I'll be joining y'all soon. I have a 9mm Sig, but got to try a 1911 on Saturday. No problems with recoil (and I have a sore paw), and I hit the target dead on better than my Sig.

The 1911 I borrowed was a total custom job. It was a beauty.

That is why the old design is so popular. I have a friend who was one of the "1911s aren't any good" crowd. He finally joined me at the range. 50 or so rounds later he was all flustered. His problem was that his groups were smaller with my 1911 than with either of his other two pistols. (I'm leaving the brands out because I don't want to turn this into a brand bashing campaign.) I'm trying to set up another trip with him- I see conversion in his future. ;)

Modern pistols come and go (some stay) but the 1911 will be around forever. Or at least until blasters hit the market. :)

racer,
I also load 200 grn. SWC. My powder 4.5 grns.
win.231. Powder could burn a little cleaner,
however. I have used this combo for years both in competition and plinking. size all
loads with care, seat properly, and have had
no feeding problems. Also, use 231 for 9mm.
pistol and AR 15 9mm. with excellent results.

Hi Easyday
I just started loading for my 45 acp and decided to try Titegroup. Burns cleaner than AA and far better than Unique. I cast for my 9mm and 357 and want to start casting for the 45 soon, I want to try 231 one of these days.Good shooting, racer

Just tried one out today.WWII Ithaca frame with an old Colt commercial slide and barrel.
Micro sights and a trigger job.It tore the center out of a B-27 target at 30 feet. It's on layaway now.
