First Time at 200 yards.

Mosin-Marauder

New member
First time shooting at 200 yards today. Used the Mosin with 1973 Surplus Ammo at an 8" gong. Set my sight at 200 metres. First shot hit way high above the gong. Second hit low below the gong. Finally the Third hit the gong, 4 inches low 3 inches right. Fourth hit the very top of the gong (pulled that one) fifth shot hit an inch above the third. Over all I'm satisfied. I didn't think I could hit it due to the open sights on the Mosin, the fact it was foggy/raining, and the range. I think I could do a lot better with a proper rest and handloads (was shooting off a truck hood). Just thought I would share, I'm pretty happy with how I did.
Anyway, advice is always appreciated on how I could improve.
Thanks!

"...with a proper rest..." Yep. Trucks are for getting there. Not shooting off. Try losing the milsurp ammo too. Eons ago, the few Mosins that came through the shop were dead on at 200 yards. No idea what ammo. Likely Norma since there was nothing else then.

Most of my shooting with old military rifles is prone using a .50 cal Ammo Can and a sandbag for a rest. I use a $3 Harbor Freight tarp to keep myself out of the dirt.

As an alternative, shove a pillow in a backpack and use that for a rest.

Probably.

The problem with most rests is that they are a PITA to lug around..... and just when you need them, you don't have them.

I'm a big fan of the M1907 style sling:

I've never used one with the mosin, but do not see a reason why it could not work.

The other shooting aid I like is shooting sticks. I like Stony Point's Steady Stix ...... in a good sitting position, with a sling and stix, I can shoot as well as I can from a bench and sandbags. The sling is always with the rifle, takes a couple seconds to get into, and the stix are only a few ounces and not all difficult to carry when folded ...... and take only a bit longer to deploy ....

I have a M1907 sling but I use it with my Savage Axis. I'm not sure how I would use it with Mosin though. But the shooting stick does sound like a good Idea. I also like the idea of a 50 cal ammo box and sandbags. Could keep the sandbags in the ammo can as well as safety glasses and ammo and stuff. I might actually do that. Thanks for the advice everyone!

If you are looking for a butt bag on a budget, take a hiking sock and fill it with airsoft BB's. Been using one of those as a butt bag for as long as I can remember, it works really well.

I'm not sure how I would use it with Mosin though.

Just put the loops through the dog collars like they were big goofy leather sling swivels .... it's all about isometric tension.

However one shoots, it's allabout form...bone, and not muscle support whenever possible.

Bone, ligaments, tendons, leather, sticks, sandbags ..... all things that do not tire...... muscles, not so much.

My advise for shooting long is do everything the same as when you shoot at shorter, more comfortable distances. Of course you have to know the ballistics of your ammo so you can adjust your point of aim, but don't let the extra distance get to you.

And I agree, the milsurp ammo was probably a big part of the problem.

You had fun, and took on a new challenge.. sounds like a great day!
