A search of the threads here will give you 100's, if not 1,000's of threads with info. There is a thread about two up from yours at this time discussing the same thing

I recommend a mossberg 500, its utterly dependable and excellent for both situations if you get the combo version which has both a long barrel for hunting and a short barrel for defense.

I have one and its outstanding, plus its less than $400. it isn't the prettiest gun around, but what do you want, a work horse or a show pony?

I got a flyer from Cabelas today. They have a Remington 870 Home/field combo for $399. You get the short home defense barrel..i think like an 18.5 and a longer 26-28inch for sporting and what not. Probably the best deal for your situation.

That or the 500 lke the rifleer said. Both will do you fine.

Go find yourself a used Remington 870 for $300. That will work, super reliable, made forever and a ton of parts around if it EVER needs repair.

It's hard to beat a pump gun combo (shotgun with an extra barrel) as a general purpose first shotgun. Keep your eyes open, Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 Express combos are frequently offered at significant discounts that are well within your budget.

Be advised, there are generally three types of combos available. They all have a long target/field barrel but the shorter second barrel can be:
  • A smooth bore deer barrel for shooting shot and slugs,
  • A specialty rifled deer barrel for shooting sabot slugs. (Sabot slugs are more accurate than standard slugs and way more expensive.), or
  • A smooth bore security barrel (usually a little shorter than the deer barrels).
Decisions, decisions….

There are always deals to be had. Ran into a guy that wanted to trade in or sell out right a 550 with extra barrels (one rifled w/scope) choke tubes in a fitted case, he wanted $300. Gander Mtn offered $175!!:barf:

The Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 are great guns

But I have a New England Firearms Pardner Protector, anything on the Remington 870 will work on it also. I paid 208.00 out of the box new for it. 18 inch barrel 5+1. It's heavy but helps with the recoil.

IMHO, the Rem 870 is the ultimate inexpensive, general purpose shotgun. Home defense, plinking, hunting, or clay bird shooting -- it's got'cha covered.

I've owned quite a variety of shotguns including Benelli, Ithaca, Winchester. I've shot a few more makes as well - Mossberg, Franchi, Beretta. But I always come back to the Remington 870 for live birds, clay birds and home defense. IMO there is no better shotgun.

Get yourself a good used 12 ga Wingmaster and don't look back. It's the only shotgun you'll ever need. It will cover everything from clays, birds and defense.

Reply:

First sentence, I agree, fir a first gun, as I said above.

Second sentence, WOW! I'll be the first to take exception with that. I guess it depends on what your definition of "need", is. :D
