First shoot 1892 32-20

Took the old 1892 Winchester to the range for the first time today. Not having any idea when it was last fired or what condition it was really in, the first shot was carefully fired at arms length. All was good and the bullet hit very close to the aiming point at 40m. I then set up a target at 25m and took a shot, resting against a post, to see where it was aiming. It hit about half an inch from the aiming point. Fired a number of shots, using the post, and then some more freehand. These are the ones in the upper circle. It was, on average, shooting about one to one and a half inches high. Adjusted my point of aim to where the cross is and fired some more freehand.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the rifle for one that's over 110 years old and with my first batch of reloads in 30 odd years.

Unless the barrel has been abused or plain shot out, a Winchester will always shoot well. With a bit of practice and a better rest, you should get one hole groups at 25m. (Don't rest the barrel, though; hold the foreend and rest your hand on the sandbag.)

One of my dream guns! I sure wish the new lever makers would not ignore the .30-30... Id buy a new one in that caliber in a heartbeat.

With the object of shooting metallic silhouette I went to the range again today to check the sights at 50m and 100m. With the sights still on the lowest setting it was still shooting about 1" high at 50m and about 4" low at 100m. Taking the sight up one notch it was shooting about 3" high at 50m and 1" low at 100m but about 2" high on the second notch. This gives me a reasonable idea of aiming points and sight settings for 25m, 50m, 75m and 100m for metallic silhouette.

Win 92. 32/20

I have a 53 win, that is a cherry, got it from a retired Sheriff. Also have old
Marlin 94. Both shoot good enough to squirrel hunt. Have found in these old
lever guns 32/20 & 25/20 they shoot cast bullets a lot better than jackets.
I use a RCBS mould to cast a 100gr FN. I have tried the lighter bullets but
found 100 gr the most accurate. Since 22 ammo deal I have been shooting
A lot of 32/20 for same price or less. You have got yourself a fine piece.

first shot

don't ever hang them up, unless you are done shooting it after cleaning it and waiting for the next time you take it out. by the way outstanding group!!.
