I'm considering purchasing a bolt action rifle for occaisional target shooting, plinking, and a possible hunt in the future. I think I've got the cartridges narrowed down to .270 Winchester or 6.5 x 55mm Swedish. Does anyone have any experience shooting these cartridges who can compare trajectory, accuracy, and impact? Thanks for any advice. LBC

I would suggest a .308

You can shoot a lot of cheap surplus ammo for around 12 or so cents per shot. Plus a .308 is a very accurate rifle and a very decent hunting rifle.

I would second the recommendation of the .308, but if you're settled on those two cartridges I would go with the 6.5x55 Swede.

It has one of the highest cross-sectional densities on the market, which means it is very high up the chart in terms of penetration capability. I recall reading or hearing somewhere that more elephants had been taken with 6.5 Swede's than with any other cartridge.

I have a deep emotional attachment to the 6.5x55 so the following is biased.

Pros: mild recoil, high SD, low BC, flat traj, enough for most North American game, especially mule and white-tailed deer, most makers still carry it in their catalogues, and easy to reload.

Cons: hard to find surplus ammo for it anymore. (That's part of reason why others suggested .308 [nothing wrong with it either]) and not as flexible at .30-`06 or .308.

Guns are tools. Different jobs for different calibers. This is part of the fun!!! LBC, buy two gun safes.
