First Rifle

I have am pretty proficient with handguns, and I have some experience with a shotgun.

However, I have no experience with a rifle. I don't think I even ever shot one.

What would you guys suggest for a rifle type gun? I don't hunt.

My use would be for fun.

AK-47. Hard to beat the price of the rifle, as well as the price of ammo.

Literally a BLAST to shoot :)

BTW - This should probably be in the "Rifle" forum.

A quality .22 rifle,,,

They simply don't get any more fun than that.

I prefer single shot rifles,,,
But you might prefer a "Tacti-Kewl" model.

The point is that the most expensive .22 ammo is 7-8 cents a shot,,,
Most centerfire rifle ammo is at least 30 cents a shot,,,

$1.75 to load a 25 round magazine is much more fun (to me),,,
Than $7.50 per 25 round mag.

That's just me though,,,

Find a friend who has a few rifles and try them out. First and foremost buy something you'll shoot. .22's are great fun, but if you find it boring then it won't get any use.

An ar15, ak47, or 1903 rifle are always a good start.

Depends on your plans. 22's are cheap and fun. But I would suggest a center fire in case you plan on hunting or longer range

Another option if you're just looking for plinking fun would be a pistol caliber carbine. You get 100-200 yard accuracy shots, and the low cost of a pistol caliber.

What is it FOR?

You can't beat a .22 for learning to shoot, and for plinking at the range.

They won't bring home any venison (legally), though.

If you're just wanting to shoot a rifle for fun, it's hard to beat a Ruger 10/22. It's highly modifiable and very reasonably priced.

A Henry .22 lever gun would be great fun too.

If you're more into the "black" guns, try a Sig 522LR or the S&W M&P 15-22. Both are tons of fun to shoot.

There's no way you'll get bored shooting a .22 rifle. Anyone who owns one will tell you how much fun they are to shoot. And they won't put near as big a hole in your wallet as the bigger-caliber guns will.

You can get 55 grain 5.56x45 193 for about $300.00 a 1000 if you look . :d

I think aarond already said

Most centerfire rifle ammo is at least 30 cents a shot,,,

Innumeracy. :(

Fun but I think I might be bored with a .22

If you can't hit an aspirin with a .22, you won't be able to hit it with a .223, either ...... nor a .338 Windbag, like as not. Fundamentals are cheaper and easier to learn with a .22 ..... Shooting poorly with a centerfire is not much fun for me ....... but to each his own: some people juggle geese.

If all you want to do is turn money into noise, I suggest fireworks.......

I like pistol shooting a lot. It's easy and fun to go pistol shooting. Rifles are a touch different in nature somehow. I like rifle shooting more

After buying one, I'd suggest an AR15 as a first rifle actually. It's light, easy to use, and can grow with you in regards to configuration and caliber

22lr is a blast to shoot..and doesn't hurt the wallet either.

But if you think you will seriously be bored with it..then another vote for a ak47..loads of fun..ammo is pretty cheap and the gun is simple to clean and operate :)

AR15/M4 ,hands down the most fun you can have with your cloths on .
You need to get out more often:D

For fun guns, you cant beat the a semi-auto .22 But as it sounds you'r elooking for something a bit more substantial.

I'd put AK or SKS pretty high on the list for cheap fun. Caveman simple, rugged, somewhat cheap to shoot.

Another idea would be a carbine of lever gun in a pistol caliber, that way you interchangeable ammo, and possibly even magazines

While I've never shot one personally the Mosin seems to be huge these days and $100 for a rifle is as cheap as it's going to get. More bang then a .22 and a cheap way to get a feel for long guns

[homestar] What Coach Z no rap? [/homestar]

A mosin may be a very good choice. If you're looking for something accurate a Finn mosin is tough to beat for the price. Surplus 7.62x54R is plentiful and cheap.

Someone posting in this thread even has one for sale (cough cough)
