First Revolver Purchase- Vaquero Baby!

I've always been a semiauto guy. All of my pistols are boring, efficient, all black pieces. Last fall I got a little taste of the other side, and I gotta say there is just something about revolvers that is more personal and fun.

I was shooting with one of my parent's neighbors who is a huge revolver guy. he let me shoot a couple of .38 snubs and a few others. What really perked my ears though was a SA revolver he had and a true black powder revolver. I had no idea he was a huge CAS person! I really didn't even know anything about it.

So I saved my pennies and got me a Ruger New Vaquero Bisley in .45 Colt! It's absolutely gorgeous! Stainless with the white Bisley grip. I'll upload a pic when I get back from the range because I'm super excited and need to go make some holes with her.

On an aside my fiancée got a H&R single shot survivor rifle in 45LC/410 to accompany me. She also picked up a Ruger LCRX .38spcl because she has an LC9 as a daily carry but wanted a wheelgun to swap it out with.

So how did I do for my first revolver? Also any advice on a good rig for a lefty would be appreciated. I did my research and I know it's not rated for Ruger only loads and has the Hilary hole, but it's tucked away under the grip and for the record I'm not a fan but I really don't want this thread to get derailed on that. ( there are a few other active threads about the locks so please post those there)

Off to the range!

My apologies. I was under the impression that there was an internal lock in the grip under the springs that could be drilled out to access. If I used the wrong wording or had misinformation I'm sorry. I just picked it up and haven't fully disassembled it yet. Just enough to clean and lube it so I can see how she shoots. My first ruger and my first revolver. Feels slightly awesome though

S&W's have an internal lock with a hole in the side of the frame. This was the result of an agreement S&W made with the Clinton administration to save their hide. Which I do not necessary blame them for. Hence the term, "Hillary hole". It has been known to fail and is generally frowned up by most shooters typically lovingly referred to as "purists".

Some Ruger single actions have an internal lock inside the grip frame, under the grips. This was not due to an agreement with a tyrannical government but by their own choice to meet the requirements of 'some' states. So far, after 9yrs in production, there is no record of them failing and they are easily forgotten about. Ruger has decided to phase out the lock and basically turn their back on those states that require them.

This thing shoots straight! They said it was factory zeroed for 15 yards and it's pretty dang close. What a blast! I can already see I'm going to have to get some snap caps to practice loading and unloading. But I'm very happy with this! I was really surprised it shoots as smoothly as it does and has a pretty good break for a factory trigger.

Vaqueros are beautiful and tough, they don't suffer from weak flat springs and generally are trouble free
I have had my 4 5/8"stainless .357 for about 2 years and I have to admit, it hadsome bad internal parts and was warranty rebuilt and tuned by Ruger free! Since, I have just shot and shot it without a hitch! Accuracy is very good and now that I am learning to hold my sight picture just a second longer, I hit a LOT better! You have to remember the lock time on a single action is a little slower than a semi-auto and hold your sight a second more. It makes shooting more fun anyhow!
I usually shoot .38 Specials and Plus P's with a sprinkling of full factory .357's.
It'll never wear out!

Congrats on the new Vaquero!

I feel your excitement having just picked one up a couple weeks ago. The nice thing about the New Model Vaqueros after 2012... there is no lock!:)

Congrats on your NV! You are going to love it! Well made, rugged and a great shooter. I have had a 5 1/2" blued in 357 for about six years and it's one of my favorites to shoot. Enjoy and have fun! :)

If Sam Colt had the materials and machinery to build that gun, the Colt SAA would have at the top of the hill for even longer than it was.

I have an old model (big frame) it is the perfect gun for sitting around and shooting imaginary buffalo. Enjoy it. With reasonable care, it will outlive you.

Thats an example...pick anything from El Paso and you will be good to go.

got me a Ruger New Vaquero Bisley in .45 Colt!
You're on the road to perfection in revolvers :D . You are hooked! Nothing, no, notta, feels better in the hands than a good o' .45 Colt Single Action Sixgun in IMHO. Sounds like you have a straight shooter too. Both of my .45 Colt Vaqueros (original and New) had to be adjusted for windage to shoot 'straight'. Enjoy!!!!

Thanks for the advice about the slight delay in the SA. I'm officially have something new to work at now, which is always a good thing. Also for the links on the leather, going to browse through there and pick out a birthday gift for myself.

And yeah this one was recently made, had only been at the ffl for 3 days and still had the chamber plug in it... And... No lock!

I'm afraid I have caught a new bug: already eyeing a .357 and a Henry Lever Action... I swear firearms are like Pringles... Find a flavor you think is the best then you find another, and another... I've already been putting these snap caps to good use.

Bob, I'm in Tennessee too. I love that we can carry open or concealed here and a SA in some nice leather isn't out of place at all. My edc backup is in a desantis ankle rig and when I'm off work "mine" is in a galco iwb. Both are decently good leather but no one ever gets to see them ;). Once I get some proficiency there may be a choice to make.

And that mag fed revolver is something else, I imagine that was a fun project! I can't even wrap my brain around the complexities of doing that...Amazing.

I'll still post a pic of (still gotta name her too) as soon as I can figure out how to get the ole file size down.
