Harley,
I was watching a movie yesterday on TV called "The Yearling" and the time frame was in the 1920's in this movie this guy trades one of his Blue Tick hounds for a hammerless O/U shotgun. My question....when was the first O/U shotgun manufactured?

Browning Superposed patent applications in 1923, 1924, 1926. First produced by FN in 1930, appeared in Browning Arms Company line in 1931. Earlist U/Os that I know of.

There have been multiple barrelled firearms almost as long as there have been firearms. Multiple barrels (including o/u) were the first practical way to increase firepower.

From the 21st Gun Trader's Guide - James Woodward & Sons, London. Best Quality O/U. Sidelock, automatic ejectors, double or single triggers. Woodward introduced this type of gun in 1908. Made until WWII. Purdy acquired Woodward after WWII and now uses the Woodward principle. That's all I've found so far. JT
