WASHINGTON, D.C. - Hundreds of students from across the country gathered here today to kick off First Monday 2000, the next major anti-gun violence event after the Million Mom March. Students signed up to plan events this fall in their own communities, and heard words of encouragement from Attorney General Janet Reno, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Andrew Cuomo, and Members of Congress. First Monday 2000 will be a national day of action to end gun violence on October 2, when more than 200 events will be held on campuses and in communities around the nation to spark discussion and activism to reduce gun violence. The First Monday in October is a day when Americans traditionally focus on justice as the Supreme Court begins its term.

In addition to Reno and Cuomo, today's rally featured Representatives Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Bobby Rush (D-IL), who both lost family members to gun violence. Also scheduled to speak were Congresswomen Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), Nita Lowey (D-NY), Connie Morella (R-MD), Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and Janice Schakowsky (D-IL).

"October 2 will be an unprecedented day of action to stop gun violence in this country," said Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron. "We are going to put a human face on the tragedy of gun violence and remind Americans that, without responsible gun laws, every one of us is at risk. We intend to launch a mobilization so massive that politicians simply can't ignore it."

"Violence is not inevitable, nor an abstract force against which we are powerless," Reno said. "We can end violence if we as individuals, as communities, and as a nation decide not to condone it, and not to remain passive . . . Organize an event on October 2 in your university or community focusing on gun violence, and call upon your elected representatives to take action on this issue."

"All across our country, the American people are demanding common-sense safety measures that will keep guns out of the wrong hands and protect our families," Cuomo said."Congress should reject the demands of gun extremists and instead take action to reduce the number of senseless deaths and injuries caused by gunfire."

The event featured a sneak preview of a powerful new film, "Up In Arms," which was produced for the Alliance by Rory Kennedy and Liz Garbus. The film will be shown at First Monday 2000 events around the country this October.

For the last six years, the Alliance has held First Monday events to promote social justice at law schools around the country. First Monday 2000 will organize events at social work schools, nursing schools, medical schools, public health schools, as well as law schools and in town halls and other forums.

Leslie Willis-Lowry, the Philadelphia-based mother of a victim of gun violence, spoke at the kick-off rally, which was held at the National Education Association (NEA) office in Washington, D.C. Physicians for Social Responsibility Executive Director and CEO Robert K. Musil, NEA President Bob Chase, and University of Pennsylvania medical student Megan McGrath also spoke at the midday event.

Aron said that guns kill 89 Americans every day - 12 of them young people. "No community, no family, no American is unaffected," she said. "Just as students have led the way for change throughout our nation's history, students are going to organize their campuses and communities to stop gun violence. We're energized. We're mobilized. And we're not going to let the National Rifle Association push us around anymore."

In August, First Monday 2000 will join with Hamilton College to release a national poll that explores the attitudes of high school students toward guns, Aron said.

First Monday 2000 is a program of the Alliance for Justice, a national association of public interest advocacy organizations located in Washington, D.C., and Physicians for Social Responsibility. The more than 125 co-sponsors of First Monday 2000 include the Million Mom March, Handgun Control Inc., the American Bar Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the National Education Association, the Children?s Defense Fund, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

I'm ready to go. Anyone from in or around Michigan, email me and we'll try to set something up. I haven't heard of anything "official" going on, so I guess it's up to us.

Gee...in October...who'dve imagined.

I say we make Congess responsible for evey death caused by anything other than guns...lobby against automobiles, water buckets, electricity, dirt, germs...whatever. Flood them out with it.
