First lever-action

I too vote for the Marlin 30-30. Overall very good rifle. I have seen used very good+ Marlin 30-30 with scope at gun shows in Florida in the $170-$190 range.

Personally, I'm a Winchester man. I think they handle better than the Marlins. Both are good guns. I suggest you find a store with both and compare them side by side. Pick the one you like best. Either way you'll have made a good choice.
 
As Grayfox said, either way, you can't go wrong. I have a Winchester 94 Wrangler in .44 Mag and an old Marlin 336 in .30-30 (bought used for $150) and am happy with both.

You could also take a look at the Rossi model 92's--they look like pretty nice rifles, and the Marlin model 94's don't look too bad either.
