First Gun

I just turned 21 and I am trying to figure out what gun I want. I shot a ruger 9mm at the range and I loved it. I'm looking into a Glock G38 or G23 though to go along with the ruger 9mm. Any suggestions about a different gun other than the glock or the ruger 9mm?

My budget is 400. I shot a beretta .38 at the range. Better hit paaterns n less recoil, but I want a gun for concealed carry and protection and definitely a semi-automatic handgun.

i don't think gocks are all the hype makes them out to be

the all synthetics are a little more jumpy than a steel gun, and the lack of a proper safety has killed more than one new gun user.

what budget are you talking about ?

You'll want to provide the friendly folks with important information like:

1) Budget
2) Intended Purpose
3) Firearms, particularly handgun, experience
4) Other stuff as they ask;)

Yep, more info definitely needed. Price range? Intended use (target/range, self defense/concealed carry)? Personal bias towards certain brands/calibers? Do you only want a semi auto or are you open to revolvers as well?

well i will tell you the same thing i told the last person. If you want inexpensive and all steel frame and a good quality gun for the price then check out the baby desert eagle made by israeli weapon industries aka magnum research. I couldnt have been any happier with mine.

Try this gun: this was my first handgun. A good one too. Great fun to shoot, comfortable, reliable.

Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm

I don't know what your intended use/budget is, but this is a start. Comes in 9, 40, 357 sig, and 45 ACP.

Beyond what a lot of people think, Glocks are quality weapons. Just depends on the shooter. I love my Glock 26. I have not tried any of the larger caliber Glocks, as I am a 9mm fan.

You could also look at the Springfield XD and XDm line. These are good solid platforms.

If you want more high end look at Sig Sauer, Heckler and Koch, or a good 1911 style .45 ACP.

Let us know what you have in mind for this gun, and we can be a little more specific.

Appreciate the info and I edited the post with the budget and other info. More replies are welcomed. Thanks.

Nothing wrong with a Glock. If you're budget is only $400 I'd say look at S&W Sigmas. They come in 9mm and .40 S&W. You can get one NIB for $300 and usually S&W offers a mail in rebate for 2 free hi-cap magazines or $50 back. My first NIB handgun was the .40, SW40VE, great gun, and I've had no problems with it at all. With the leftover $100 you can buy ammo :D

Do a lot of looking around. Find the gun that feels like it was made to fit your hand.

Any of the ruger p series make a great first pistol. I and most of my friends started out on those. The price is right and the quality is good.

If I were in your position I'd get one compact (Glock 19) size pistol in whatever caliber you decide on, then spend the other $400 on gear, ammo, range time, instruction, CCW, etc.

Get one that fits your needs and then get good with it.

pistol

Find a CPO ceritified pre owned Sig in the red case get a 226 or a 229 or even a 228 all come in 9mm check impact guns

any way to increase your budget ?

post recall ruger LCPs can be had for 370, and if they are post recall people have been satisfied with them for a 'bargain' for the dollar.

for 525$ or so you can get a beretta PX4 storm. manual safety, LOWEST RECOIL in 9mm, dependable etc. but if it's out of budget then look into the LCP

S&W 910

Look at the Smith & Wesson 910. Its a full sized, 15 round 9mm pistol. I've carried 3 different S&W auto loaders over the years and have had nothing but good experiences with all of them. My expensive Smiths are a 5906(9mm) and a 4006(.40) are great, heavy, beautiful, stainless steel boat anchors but my favorite carry gun is my 908. She may not be the best looking girl at the dance but she sure makes up for it with skill and enthusiasm. The Smith 9xx guns are some of the most overlooked high quality low cost non-polymer pieces you can find anywhere. They aren't as easy to find as Glocks or Rugers but I just found 5 listed on gun broker for right around $400. Don't be afraid of high quality used pistols.
