First Carry Gun, S&W Shield 9!

Well I'm FINALLY taking the course to get my carry permit on Saturday, so in anticipation I ended up with a brand new M&P Shield 9mm today. The gun was on sale for $389, and I snagged the Sticky holster for another $22. I have to say, I'm impressed by how it feels both in my hands and holstered inside the waistline. I can't wait to try it out, I'm used to much larger handguns such as the Glock 34 pictured next to the Shield. Will report back with range results as soon as possible!

Also I must say I am very impressed with the fit and finish of this gun. What a gorgeous and well thought out product.

Any feedback on the holster? I'm wondering what other options are out there for the Shield.

I have the same gun, I carry mine in a Remora holster and have a Pearce pinky extension with the tip ground down.

A Shield is my EDC. I carry mine in a kydex-leather hybrid IWB, ala Crossbreed Supertuck or Galco Kingtuk.

Reminds me of the first time I went deer hunting and got an 8 point buck. They told me, just hang up your rifle now - you'll only be disappointed from here on out.

You may keep buying new ccw pistols over the coming years, but you won't find one better than your new Shield.

Congrats!

The Shield is not my bag, but danged if those pictures don't get me tempted!

Well done.

Yes, very nice pictures! What did you use to take them - dslr?

I do like the shield, had one for a spell, but traded it on a different one as i do not have my ccw completed yet.

One thing to note, become familiar with the take down procedure. Not that it is bad, but it was not to me as easy as a Glock.

All the best, it is really a great gun.

Bought one today. Thought from what I had read that the newer model without the thumb safety was the way to go now I'm not so sure . There's not much travel or takeup before discharge. I'm worried about an accidental discharge if I carry with one in the chamber . Also , compared to my neighbor's Shield with thumb safety, when you rack the slide for dryfire , there is a slight hitch as the slide travels forward , like it's catching on something . Fear I made a mistake not getting model with thumb safety .

Congrats. Great choice. I carry my Shield in a IWB Kydex holster from Multiholsters made in SE Michigan. Excellent holster! Also, I got a pair of the rubberized Talon grips, which I feel makes a huge improvement to the gun.

I just got a Tulster carbonfiber IWB for my Shield 9. Been wearing it about a week now and I really like it.

Shield 9mm

Nice gun. I got one a month ago with the safety. I live on a lot of acreage so I can practice whenever. I love this gun. It feels right for my smallish hands. I also got my ccw last month in napa, ca. and this will be my carry gun. It shoots anything I put in it, unlike my kahr cw9 which only shoots Winchester without jamming. It has very acceptable kick back. Even my daughters like it. If your thinking about getting one, get one. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Very happy camper indeed.:)

Boy, do I like this gun ! Shot it today for the first time . Ran 4 mags through it , a mix of ball and hollow points without a hitch. If I had to describe it in one word, comfortable. Recoil is negligible and unlike other small autos , the trigger doesn't kill my finger after several mags .
Surprisingly accurate even in my hands . Very pleased .

I mostly carry a 9mm Shield, the one with the safety (that was the only option when I bought it). I carry it in a Galco King Tuck holster and I only use 7-round flush-fitting mags. I actually got rid of the extended 8-round mag. I really don't like grip or pinky extensions on carry guns; the whole point of a carry gun is concealment, and a longer grip prints more. Sure, my pinky hangs off the grip with the 7-round flush-fit mags, and it doesn't feel quite as good in the hand, but my shooting is just as good with or without the extended grip, and that's all that matters. And it's more concealable without the grip sticking out more.
