First AR purchase, request info

Hello,

I've taken the plunge and I'm thinking a AR is my next purchase however I'm not sure the route I should be taking. Here is what the gun would be used for. I mostly target shoot and don't hunt however if the situation arises it would be a good defense gun if the shotgun isn't a option. I don't need a high powered scope (that will come with the longer barreled version that I may get at some point) but a reflex or optical sight is in the cards along with iron sights. That being said front sight like the A2 or fold down? Options for trigger type +/-. Lastly barrel, twist, stainless or not, heavy or standard, chrome or normal? Thank you

You might want to pop on over to ar15.com, or another AR specific site. I own two AR15s and have been pleased with them both. I use mine for hunting, plinking and self defense. One is a piston driven rifle which is scoped. The other is a DI.

I have added a second upper assembly to my DI rifle that converts the 5.56 to a 6.8SPC II (.270) for hunting predators with a Leupold 3-9x40 AR scope while the 5.56 upper has an EoTech XP2-0 optic with spring loaded iron sights for self defense.

The piston driven AR has a scope mounted and is used primarily for plinking, or hunting small furry critters such as ground squirrel, or P-Dogs. I also own a CZ 527 bolt action rifle in 5.56 with a long range scope for small furry critters.

Both AR15s are 1 in 9 twist barrels. They allow the use of adequately heavy bullets yet also handle lighter weight as well. The CZ is a 1 in 12 which gives me light weight fast bullets which work fine on small game, or for plinking. Good luck and enjoy.

I would opt for a chrome lined 16" mid-length standard weight barrel with flat top receiver. Anything between a 1/7 to 1/9 twist but lean towards the 1/9. Instead of a red dot sight, I would go with a 1-4x scope.
This is based on the 2 ARs I have and the way i use mainly for fun at the range.
================================================
I only have two ARs, a S&W 5.45x39 M4 type carbine and a BCM .223 mid-length with SS mid-weight barrel.

My S&W 5.45x39 setup:
- Started out with fixed front and DD iron sights, then a reflex sight, now a scope. The irons were OK and the reflex was easy to use but neither were precise. So, I switched sights to a Nikon African 1-4x scope. Usually set to 1-1.25, target aquisition is slightly slower than the reflex but much more precise. I like the setup so much that I have cut off the fixed front sight.
- Trigger: I started out with stock, polished the stock, then a Gissele SSA 2 stage. The Gissele SSA has a very clean feel to it. Very nice.
- Furniture: Magpul MOE stock and the MIAD grip. I left the front original and just added an MOE vertical grip. There is a new magpul K grip - angle is steeper which is better for when you shoulder the carbine close - that i like to try.

BCM .223 setup:
- will cut off the front sight when I get a 2-7x scope.
- will replaced the vertical grip with one that doubles as a bipod.
- It also has MOE stock and MIAD grip.
- Front furniture will leave it as stock.
- trigger is stock but will change to a Gissele SSA-E

I normally shoot the at 50 yards but when I get the 2x7 scope, I will venture more to the 100 yard line.

Twist rate:
My .223 Remington 700 has 1/9 and it likes 55 grain Remington factory ammo more than the heavier bullets.
My .223 BCM with 1/8 twist likes 62 grain more than the 55 grain bullets.
