First AR - Is this a good deal?

I am mainly a Kalashnikov guy and own two AKM's, a 47 and a 74. I have been intrigued by AR's but they have always been out of my price range.

I was talking to a friend of mine recently who has 7 AR's and he asked if I would like to buy one of his. I have shot the gun in question and know that it functions properly and is a good shooter. Here are the specifics.

CMT flat top upper
LMT M4 profile 4150 chrome lined 1:7 barrel with fixed A2 front sight
LMT shrouded semi-auto bcg - pre MIM gas key
Stag lower receiver
Stag lower parts kit
Standard M4 single heat shield hand guards
Standard M4 stock
Standard A2 grip
A2 birdcage flash hider
H buffer
A.R.M.S. #40L rear sight
6 USGI mags

$450

This gun has about 300 rounds through it. My friend assembled this rifle as he has done the majority of his AR's. If I ever had any problems he would help me out as he is well versed on the AR platform and is a good person.

This is a "friend" price because he knows I have been wanting an AR but I was curious as to the hives opinion on this setup?

Thanks,
Mark

Bought the gun last Thursday!

Took it to the range Saturday with 100 rds. of Tula. Ate every round like candy. Ejection pattern from the 3 - 4 o'clock range. Ran some South African 5.56. Again, all good!

15 shot group at 50 yrds. with irons I had a group of 6 bullets touching about the size of a half dollar. Other shots were close with one flyer. No doubt due to the man behind the trigger.

Very impressed with this gun!

CONGRATS!

Looks to be in great condition!

Recommended upgrades:

  • Magpul MIAD/MOE or Ergo Grip
  • A bunch of Magpul PMAGs (best magazines on the market)
  • A nice rail for the front (Check out the Samson Evolution series - great quality, affordable price)
  • Magpul MOE/CTR Stock

Then you will be great shape. The rail is really the only somewhat expensive item. A 9" Evo rail runs around $155-$175 - which is pretty good compared to something like Troy which is nearly twice that. Midwest Industries is a good option too, but I'd put Samson at a higher quality for about $10 bucks more.

Well aren't you a smug monkey? Figure the extra mags alone are worth $60. That makes the AR sub $400. That is about a smoking deal as you can get these days.
