First 12 Gauge Pump Shotgun

I am pleased to have found this site and hope to gather feedback from the members in helping me make my purchase.

Being my first shotgun, I feel that the 12 gauge is the most universal and reccomended. I'm looking for a tactical version for home defense, but also one that I can enjoy shooting clays or what not at the range. Therefore I have researched and come up with 3 candidates:

-Mossberg 500
-Benelli Supernova (20155)
-Remington 870 Express

As of now I am leaning towards the Benelli because of user reviews and reliability, but am also turned away by the lack of accessories for the gun. Remington on the other hand is a time proven design, but recent quality control issues have scared me with this one. Finally Mossberg is one that I do not know much about, but know that it carries a history like the 870.

I'm looking for input on which of these three shotguns satifies my requirements for 1) Tactical/home defense 2) Good gun for shooting clays 3) Gun that is well-made and reliable.

I look forward to hearing your personal input.

V/r,
-Adam

What "accessories" do you envision NEEDING on your gun. For clays and hunting, the stock gun works just fine. For HD, many like a shorter barrel, thinking they will be sweeping their house for BG;s instead of hunkering down and calling 911 - that's your decision to make.

If you are talking about adding all of the mall ninja stuff, try this first. Whatever gun you get, shoot it like it is for a solid 6 months. After that see if you really think it might need a bunch of gizmos and doodads added. Most of the time, you'll find the answer to be "not really necessary"

Then don't consider an entry level pump gun. Sure you can use the clay sports for training with your pump, but you'll soon be disappointed when a quick second shot is required. IMHO, a quality pump may be marginally satisfactory for clays but it's not a "good" choice.

What I mean by lack of accessories is not adding all the bells and whistles, but the fact that Benelli doesn't even make a factory extension (and from I read only 1 company makes one - and at a pretty penny).

Again, take a HD course and see if that extension is really necessary and worth the cost - no matter which gun. Adding a lot of weight at the end makes it feel (and move) like it is even heavier, thereby making follow up shots more difficult for some. Borrow some from friends or elsewhere and give them a good try in whatever scenario you envision happening; realizing that most HD/SD confrontations rarely involve any shots fired, let alone a platoon's worth of ammo
