Firing Problem with Taurus 617

A bit of a firing problem with my Taurus 617ti (snubby)...

Firing .38 rounds is not much of a problem ... but when I fire .357 rounds the gun sparks heavily on either side of the cylinder, then the cylinder quickly ceases to revolve. Upon inspection I see that copper gets crammed up at the base of the barrel (not actually in the bore ... but on the outside of the tube), where the cylinder and barrel meet.

Does anyone have an idea what may be causing this? Possibly a gap problem? It certainly doesn't seem too safe...

Since 38s seem to be OK, the problem may be with the type of ammo if it is cheap plated stuff. A second guess would be that the forcing cone is dirty or not cut right. It is also common for the TI guns to have very small cylinder gaps - these get clogged up pretty fast. Do a search on "Taurus cylinder gap".

I had a similar problem with a Taurus 608. It was peeling jackets and depositing them at the ported end of the barrel. This resulted in sparking and inaccuracy. Had a gunsmith look at it and he recommended I send it back to Taurus immediately. Sent it back 2 weeks ago, still waiting...

Make sure the buildup is equal on both sides of the barrel. If the cylinder "timing" is off and the bullet is entering the forcing cone near an edge, it will peel the bullet just like you describe.
