Firing pin Winchester 94 Pre-64

I recently inherited a Pre-64 Winchester Model 94.
Unfortunately, the gun will not fire.
I removed the breach bolt from the gun, and upon examination, the firing pin will not extend outside of the breach bolt. The pin freely flops back and forth inside the breach bolt, but does not poke beyond the bolt on the bullet side.
Is this potentially the incorrect firing pin for this model? Based on some searching, it appears that the pins have been redesigned several times over the years.
Should the pin be under spring tension?

I removed the firing pin, which was not easy.
An online tutorial stated that the pin would simply fall out the back of the breach bolt; however, I had to use a punch from the bullet side to push the pin back and then grab it with pliers.
 
The pin looks to be intact. It is a uniform width until the end, at which point it tapers to a dull point to project through the breach bolt and strike the cartridge.
I am wondering whether the tapered section has been cut off. The pin looks like pictures that I see online, but I can't get clear views of the tapered end to see comparatively how long it is supposed to be.
 
If you had to grab the firing pin with pliers to get it out, it is most likely fouled with varnished oil. Clean the firing pin and inside the bolt body with a good solvent, then reassemble and test.

When inserted into the bolt body (bolt out of the rifle), the firing pin should protrude approximately .055"-.065" from the face of the bolt. When it is in the rifle with the bolt open, it will not protrude because the nose of the lever holds it back.

I'll clean it and give it a try, but I am really thinking that the pin is either incorrect or that it has been cut.
When inserted into the bolt, it doesn't come close to protruding on the bullet side, even when I push it from the trigger side. With the pin in one hand and bolt in the other, I also can't insert the tapered section into the hole on the end of the bolt (bullet side) from the opposite direction.

It sounds like the firing pin tip is broken off. You should be able to insert the front end of the firing pin into the hole in the bolt face around 1/10 inch.

You can buy a new firing pin from Gun Parts Corp (www.gunpartscorp.com); be sure to give them the serial number of the rifle.

But before you try to install it, clean out the hole in the bolt using a bronze brush and cleaning rod and a good solvent.
