Firing Pin Wear. What to look for?

I posted this question as an afterthought in another thread. Just as some background I have an old Colt Detective Special with a pinned hammer and the firing pin recently broke off while dry firing. Most likely from years of firing and dry firing. This got me worrying about the old S&W's that I own. What should I look for on the firing pins that might be an indication that they too may snap. Thanks

Other than using a magnifier to look for cracks that may already be there, I know of no way to check for a possible fracture. The fact is that that type of failure is so very rare that worrying about it is rather pointless. It is a bit like doing a microscopic examination of the hydraulic brake lines before starting your car.
