Firing flares through shotgun??

In theory yes but it better be one heck of an emergency.

One of the guys at the club admitted to trying this and the flare stuck in the barrel just behind the choke. He said the barrel turned cherry red about 3 inches back from the muzzle and after the flare burned out, a grey ring remained.

Justifiably concerned that he had changed the temper of his barrel steel he did the prudent thing and his lovely Winchester Model 12 trap gun is now 4 inches shorter and is a skeet gun.

In theory you could, but I wouldn't try it on anything tighter than an Improved Cylinder choke.
And as PJR pointed out, it better be a REAL emergency

Can you shoot flare shells in a shotgun?

Unchoked guns should be Ok, (like my Mossberg 590) but wouldn't make a habit of it. Maybe one to test if you really think you will need it and then emergencys only.

Can you shoot shotgun shells in a flare gun?

Most are plastic or really thin metal, You couldn't pay me enough to try it.

Ledbetter:
If you try a regular shotgun shell in a flare launcher, please let me know ahead of time. I want to be at least 5,000 yards away......

You've given me an idea....

If we get enough rain around here, I think I'll get some Dragon's Breath rounds for Independence Day.
