Firestar .40

I just found a firestar .40 with 2 mags for $350 used, is it a good deal? And if so how does it stack up as far as carry guns go? I have shot the .45 on a larger frame and was happy with it. Thanks for any help you all can give.

my white whale...

I really really like the Star M40 (Firestar).

I admired them all through the 1990's and just never could swing the $400 for a new one.

I fired one a few times at an indoor range in my city.

I found it to be extremely accurate and enjoyable to shoot.

It is a very compact .40 - but it is relatively heavy at 30oz.

If you are a fan of 1911s and the BHP, this should fit well within your collection.

Recently, I was trying very hard to find one of these - only since they are not manufactured any more, they are not on the "safe" list in Kali - that means you can only buy one from an individual and I just could not find one.

I did find several at local shops but they could sell out of state only - ARGH!

I think $350 may be a little high - but if it has the Starvel finish (Nickel) and is in 98%+ condition then I would say its worth it.

The gun seems to be closer to the BHP in concept than the 1911 but it really is a nice weapon - nothing fancy, its just a good design, well executed.

my $0.02

let me know if you get it :)

The Firestar is a great little pistol, but $350 is a little above average in this neck of the woods. They usually go for around $200-300 used. They're all-steel, can be carried cocked-and-locked, and they're very small and easy to tote. Mine was 100% reliable with ball and HP ammo, and very accurate. Their only drawback is their weight (pretty heavy for such a small gun), and the fact that spare parts are difficult to find these days. Other than that, they are excellent carry guns.

Neat Lil' gun.....

With two mags...it's almost OK....but not quite.

Tell him your wife will only give you $300....
Leave him your number......and I bet he calls you back.
Part are hard to come by, and everyone knows it.
Let him know that's "her" biggest concern.
When a brittle FP chips...or any other parts go south,
you'll be glad you kept it at $300 or less.

It is a "little" high.

I`ve seen them in the $250-300 range. I have the .45 and it`s an underrated gun. It does compare more to the 1911 than the Browning IMO and I own both.

Try the "parts are hard to get" approach and see what happens. However, don`t tell him CDNN has factory mags for $19.99.:D

They're great guns -- I have three of them, including a 40 in the Starvel finish.

But be warned: parts are very hard to find. And if you break a firing pin, you'll probably have to have a gunsmith fabricate one for you. (Oops. I think someone here on TFL found a parts source; you may want to do a search on STAR.)

Mine MD-40 is very compact, but heaviernhell. The joke at the range is that if I MISS the bad guy, all I've got to do is drop the gun on his foot. He'll be out of action for a week!

I paid $225 for mine, ANIB. I think $300 is the "start haggling" price. I picked up a bunch of 7-round mags from CDNN.

The triggers can be tweaked to be very, very good. Mine was and is.

$350 is high. I picked up my like new .45 for $200 a couple of years ago. Very accurate and reliable but no parts are around. Mark

Firestar 40

Hell I'll sell you mine that's at 90% or better w/ 80 rds through it. Enough to get broken in and to find any glitches. It would come in it's original box w/ tools, 4 magazines ( incl. 1 - 7 rder), original papers, and a custom Milt Sparks Summer Special IWB holster and mag(2) carrier also for $350 or make me an offer. This cost me $345 new w/ just 1 magazine. It shoots well, is VERY CLEAN and well maintained. I'm selling it cause I haven't shot it in over a year since I started getting into 3 gun competitions and USPSA. I think this is one of the most concealable serious caliber pistols out there. Yes it's somewhat heavy( doubles as a club) but if you've ever carried a Para Ordnance P13 w/ an extra magazine, now that's heavy. :)

Mike (703 739 2150) was the former factory armorer for Star and has all the parts INCLUDING firing pins ($20).
I know where there is a new in box 45 starvel with 1 mag for $325 plus shipping.

I would sell you my Starvel .40 for that as well. Anything over $250 is too high for a used one, I think that I paid $259 for mine NIB before they were blowing them out for $210.

Tracer: Do you have an email address for Mike? I'd like to get an extra firing pin for my M45, and inquire as to what else he might have in stock.

The Firestars are neat little guns and fun to shoot. I bought mine used, and it's already more than paid for itself. No problems to date, and no regrets.
