Fired new P99

Howdy folks,

I picked up my new P99 the other day and was
waiting till today to get it to the range. My
first range test with a new gun is basically
a function and sight regulation test. (I was worried about the sights as when I picked up
my "special order" from the local dealer the sights were moved all the way to the right. I decided to take a chance and assume that when the
new American style 3-dot sights were put on, they
got lazy so I adjusted them to center before my
range trip.) This thing shoots great! With the
sights centered I couldn't even see my first 8
shots - ALL IN THE BLACK DOT!. I'm not the best
pistol shot but this thing makes me look pretty
good. I fired 100 rounds winchester white-box and
50 rounds win - white box JHP without malfunction.
Recoil is more noticable than my Glock (I think the narrower grip and lack of recoil distribution is to blame) but not uncomfortable. With my eyes
not what they used to be I only fired out to 15
yards but am Highly impressed with the performance
of this pistol - both free hand and benched. I just have one question, am I the only one that has
trouble with the rise in the middle/inside of the
trigger guard banging my trigger finger under recoil and trigger reset? That seems to be the only downside to this pistol. (though the magazine
release will require some practice!) Overall this
thing gets an "A". A little recontouring of the
inside of the trigger guard might bring it up to
an "A+". My Glock's may get jealous...

coffee, welcome to the wide world of walther p-99 enthusiasts. the more you shoot it the more you will come to enjoy it. don't worry the glocks will handle the rejection, but don't neglect them. take them to the range now and then, feed them a few rounds and then clean 'em up and put them back into the safe for another year. *grin*

I noticed when I used mine in the first class that the trigger guard rubbed my finger a little raw. I hardly notice it now. I am not sure if I compensated or if I just got used to it. I guess that could be honed if you need to.

The mag release is better operated with either your trigger finger or middle finger of your your shooting hand. For me anyway. I use the trigger finger. To use your thumb does require a little movement in the palm, which may not be optimum during an emergency reload.

Welcome aboard.

Congratulations on your new "toy". I've only had mine for a couple of weeks now. I'm not having the trigger finger problem that you are, so I can't offer any sound advice. I presume that you got a 9mm; does it have the traditional DA/SA trigger or the QA (quick action Glock-like) trigger? I bought the 9mm but plan on getting a P99 in .40 Auto before too long.

Catbird,

Yup, I got the 9mm in blue - standard DA/SA.
Incredible weapon 'cept for that trigger guard
thing. Still can't figure out why they did that
unless it's to keep the glove from catching
under the trigger or guide the finger to the
trigger face. Looks like this may be my new
duty pistol - just need to get a holster...

Regarding the trigger problem: is your finger hitting the little arc that points up slightly, directly under the trigger when the gun is decocked? My finger doesn't come close to that point; I think it's because I use a VERY high hold on the grip (as high as I can go).

I don't know what type of holster you're looking for but you might want to look at www.comp-tac.com

FWIW, I ordered a holster (via phone) from them on Wednesday afternoon for my Glock 33 and was shocked to see it in my mailbox on Friday afternoon. Good quality, too.

Since I got my P99, my Glocks (8) aren't feeling rejected at all; they're glad to get a much needed rest! ;)

I picked-up and shoot my new P99 on Tuesday, put 300 rounds of my reloads through it , ran perfect. UPS man brought my 16 round mags yesterday so back to the range to try them out and let my wife shoot it.

Coffee~,

Congrats on your new P99! :D
Welcome to the world of Walther excellence. ;) After I bought my first P99 (a .40) I was hooked.
I can't help you with the trigger guard problem your having because I haven't experienced it while shooting any of my three P99's. I believe that I read somewhere that it is there to keep your finget up on the trigger in reset especially in rounds fired in rapid succession.
Click on the link to my web site to view my P99's. :D :D

PS: don't forget to treat your Glocks with some degree of respect now that you have a better pistol! They will get jealous.

Congratulations Coffee357

You made a very good choice. Enjoy your shooting and keep it safe !
