Fired my Remington 7400 on Saturday

The thing has suprisingly mild recoil. The kick is nothing compared to my 12 gauge, and it's well balanced and handles well.

However, I do NOT like the manual of arms. The bolt release is on the magazine. In other words, to do a reload, you have to drop a round into the chamber, release the bolt, THEN remove the magazine and insert a fresh one. The mag release is difficult to operate quickly, and apparently you can't remove the magazine with the bolt locked back.

I'm having buyers regret. It's a nice, nice rifle, but it's not something I really wanted. I wanted, and still want, a .308 battle rifle, probably a FAL. So I am in the process of saving up for that, but the question is, should I keep this rifle or sell it once I get my .308 battle rifle? I figure with a scope and bipod the 7400 could make a nice long range thumper, and would probably be more accurate than the 18" barreled DS Arms Austrian FAL carbine I want...

Opinions?

You might want to see how accurately it groups with some various ammo. I'm guessing this is in .308?

Never even held one but have heard some tales of these not being "too accurate." I'm sure it varies from rifle to rifle.

Depending on this last would determine whether or not it's gonna ever be a long range thumper. Maybe, for your LRT, sell or trade for a bolt gun ... ?

7400

It's in .30-'06. I might just sell it, if I can get any money for it. It is hunting season, so I could probably get almost as much as I paid.

Er...like I said, I have buyer's regret, especially since I decided to buy the VEPR II. It was kind of an impulse purchase.

*eh-heh*

Could've been worse, Nightcrawler. Might have gotten married on an impulse & that alot tougher to fix - huntin' season or no. :D

Doesn't sound like you're in any rush. Play with it a bit & who knows? might turn out to be a nice one to have around & if not, take your time so you can get what you need out of it.

Don't want to repeat another mistake by impulse selling it & taking a beating on that too.

yeah...

Besides, it's a GORGEOUS rifle. Fine laminated walnut stock and beautiful finish.

A Harris Bipoid and a nice scope mount and I'll have a fun longer-ranged plinker, since I'm not gonna scope the VEPR. My VEPR II .308 will be more like my plinker. I've got a 'smith who's gonna see if he can't convert it to take Inch or Metric FAL magazines. Be fun to blast away with milsurp ammo.

Nope, cut your losses. You won't be happy till you get what you want, not what you settled on. Just don't get jumpy and dump the 7400 at some ridiculously low price.

"Pend's on what you want..."

I have a 7400 in .35 Whelen. Shoots a little over 1". As you said, no recoil to speak of. Heck, it isn't supposed to be a battle rifle, wasn't intended to be a super-accuracy rifle.

Mine's excellent for what I want...lots of knock-down, super low recoil, and quick handling.

How many times are you going hunting and have to do a quick mag change? Man, if 4 or 5 rounds isn't enough take up another sport. If you were wise enough to buy used and got it right, you should be able to get most or all of your money back.
