Fired a very pleasant revolver yesterday...

Kentucky Rifle

I was riding around with a buddy discussing the next gun purchase and he says, "Let's do some outside shooting to clear your head". I happened to have my S&W model 36 and he had a Ruger Blackhawk. I fired the snub for a while and was my typical un-accurate self when he said, "Here, try my Ruger". Well, it was chambered for .45 Colt and had what looked to me to be about a 5.5 or 6 inch barrel. (I'm guessing here.) Knowing that it was a .45 long, I took a firm grip and planted my feet in a Weaver stance and fired at an empty Coleman fuel can that someone had nailed to the top of a fence post about 50 feet away. Boom! Dead center, first shot! I didn't even notice the recoil and the report was FAR more pleasant than my little .38 snub had been. It was just a very nice revolver with which to spend an afternoon. I was surprised at the CRACK! my .38 snub had made compared to the pleasant Boom! of the Blackhawk. The Blackhawk was MUCH nicer to shoot. I thought the Ruger owners might enjoy this post. :)

Big guns are often right friendly.
36 kinda like a Jack Russell....will get into it, whatever it is. A pain at times and a protecter at others.

Big guns kinda like a foot warmin houndawg. super friendly and will work too.

Glad you had fun with the bigun.

"DELIGHTFUL".....and accurate :D

You can qdd "WHOOOOooof, WHOOooof!. and YAPYAPYAP to that, just for punctuation

Good gun, and reloader friendly

Blackhawks are the epitome of an "honest to goodness decent gun". They are reliable, accurate, and brutally strong. Several reloading manuals list Blackhawk/Redhawk only 45LC loads that get real close to .44 MAg territory. You also have a very large selection of bullet weights when it comes to reloading Col Colt's classic.

I have a snubby 38, and a 3 1/2" Ruger Vaquero .357. While the snubby isn't bad, the Vaquero is much easier on my hands, even with "insane" 357 handloads. Tried a co-workers 5 -1/2" Vaquero .45LC yesterday, using 'Mag-Tech (?) Cowboy Action loads

Like the car commercial "....I gotta get one of those....."

I forgot to add this...

After the shooting was over and my "mind was clear", my friend went around and picked up every piece of empty brass we had ejected. Even the .38's. I asked him why he picked up the .38's since he doesn't reload that caliber and he said, "You never know..I might get some .38 dies sometime". Smart guy.

Close to .44 Mag?

In a Ruger revolver, .45 Colt is WELL INTO .44 Mag territory, and does it with lower peak pressures to boot. Just look at Buffalo Bore's and Cor-Bon's .45 Colt "+P Magnum" loads:

Cor-Bon:

-45 COLT Magnum+P 265gr BondedCore HP 1350fps/1073ft/lbs
-45 COLT Magnum+P 300gr JSP 1300fps/1126ft/lbs
-45 COLT Magnum+P 335gr HardCast 1050fps/820ft/lbs

Buffalo Bore:

-325 gr. L.B.T.- L.F.N. (1325 fps / M.E. 1267 ft. lbs.)
-300 gr. Speer J.F.N. (1325 fps / M.E. 1170 ft. lbs.)
-260 gr. J.H.P. (1450 fps / M.E. 1214 ft. lbs.)
-300 gr. Speer J.F.N. (1200 fps / M.E. 959 ft. lbs.)

Just think how proud old Sam Colt would be if he knew that now, in 2002, his cartridge is still in production, and pushing bullets to 1325 feet per second! :)

Thanks, for the compliment on the Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt. I happen to have the Blackhawk in the .45 Colt/.45ACP convertible. I just love that gun!

I sure didn't notice a fireball like that. What type ammunition were you using in that picture? By the way, it's a GREAT picture!
Suitable for framing, IMO.:D

I like Sam's analogies also.

The single action Colt-style Ruger has less apparent kick than a swing out cylinder revo for a given cartridge. The Colt-type rolls in the hand while the DA type (sawhandle) recoils back into the web of the hand and torques up.

SORRY TO BURST YOUR BUBBLE BUT

Sam was dead & cold well befour the 1873 Colt SAA and the round it fathered (45 long colt) were introduced.

some more photos

hi,
Kentucky Rifle, the load in the pics are my handloads, RAN 250 FP, in front of AA#9 forgot the grainage but I remember about a half grain below Max. the Smokey load is 255 Gr LRN in front of IMR 800x. Check out the pics.
