Fired a rifle for the first time ever today

Well, a .22 was recommended to me by some members of the board when I asked a few days ago. I went and purchased a Remmington 597, and a cheap 4x32 scope (tasco).

Anyhow, I took it to the range today and fired it for the first time. In fact, it is the first time I've fired a "real" gun.

After the initial boring time of firing, checking, adjusting the scope, repeat about 10 times, I finally got it to a point where it was fairly accurate. Then, I shot a few clips just trying to pick off certain numbers on the target from 25, 50, and 75 ft. Finally, right before I left I just shot as fast as I could pull the trigger, just for fun.

My overall impression of this rifle is very good, but having a wide scope helps. (I hate those tiny ones that are about as big a round as your index finger.) It is also a synthetic stock (don't care for real wood stocks).

If anyone has any questions, lay 'em on me.

Needless to say, consider me hooked: I'm going back to the range tomorrow :)

Thanks for the welcome into the firearm owner's family.

I've got the same setup... same gun, stock, and with a Bushnell 4X on it. Fun gun. It feels awfully small after playing with my real rifles though.

I'm glad to see another person getting into rifle shooting. Try going to a field with a good back stop and throwing a tennis ball out. As you shoot it it will roll away. See how far out it gets before you can't reliable hit it. :P Don't try this if there are little dips in the field, the ball disappears and it quite agravating. :P

Congratulations...

The first time out can be either the most gratifying or the mose frustrating experience one can have. You did right in seeking advice, getting decent equipment, and observing firearms safety. Welcome to the fraternity.

Thanks. It feels good to be a gun owner.

KilgorII: Is your name any relation to the town of Kilgore, Texas?

Heh, you know of it too Art? I'm surprised, it's a pretty small town.

LOL.... I am not that far from Kilgore.... just in Tyler.

I'm going back to the range today. The guns that run the place are really nice.... they aren't too up tight about things, and are pretty cheap.

Now I'm wishing I could get more than a 10-round clip. I only have three so I've gotta stop and reload often.

The 10-22 is Ruger's semiauto .22 long rifle. Just as 597 is Remington's. Walter apparently thinks the 10-22 is superior. I don't care one way or the other. I bought the 597 because it felt good in my hands. It doesn't jam and is quite accurate. The 10-22 probably is too.

Kilgor: Don't know how you could have deduced that I thought the 10-22 was better. Was just passing a little info along to a newbie.

Actually, if I didn't own a 10-22, I'd probably opt for the Rem. I REALLY don't like the fact that the 10-22 bolt doesn't lock back after the last shot's fired. I also dont' like the idea of having anything with "Ruger" written on it in my little gun collection.

Actually, I'm not too much into rimfires. I occasionally break out the 10-22 and fire a couple of hundred rounds, but generally find the .22's boring.

Nice rifle, but if it's a Remington, then it's not a 10-22!!

The way you worded it semmed to say that if it wasn't a 10-22 then it wasn't up to par. Misunderstanding I suppose.

Welcome to the Happy Land of Rifle Shooters soon you'll be firing Mini 14s,ARs AK FAL SKS M14 M1A..................................................................................... 50BMG

Aha! Now I understand. I skipped over that typo. Makes more sense now.

Not two m's in Remington either.

LMAO at myself. I had to come back and edit this post because I mispelled Remington myself the first time.

Dangit you people are incessant! :)

The picture has been corrected. I had just assumed that 10/22 was an alternative expression for a .22 Long Rifle; never realized it was a model number.

As for the extra 'm': good ol' mis-spelling.
