Well after a great number of years of shooting and lots of experence I fired a .40 in my .45 Kimber Compact this date by mistake.( the case blew but no damage to me or the gun)...Just goes to show how a moment of not thinking could really ruin your day.

When I bought my new HK USPc .40, I was loading up the magazines when I realized I was grabbing out of the 9mm box! Fortunately I caught it in time. From now on I always make sure I only shoot one caliber at a range session!

glh, you are lucky. extractor must have held it enough to fire. Have seen .40 go into the bore, shooter went into malf drill and put a .45 into it behind the .40. Little rough on the weapon.

Have also seen, in a match, .40 stovepipe....was loaded in middle of .45 mag. No damage, just embarrassment for the shooter.

I have done it deliberately. Also 9mm in a .40. The 1911 firing pin jumps 3/4 inch out of the breech face and will fire a cartridge that is anywhere near it if it is close enough to the primer.

This usually does no serious damage, only that described. BUT here is an interesting scenario. The pistol is a .45, 1911 type. I chamber the first round with the gun level. That round is a .40, which will be held in the .45 magazine. The .40 round is not held by the extractor and is pushed into the chamber by the slide movement.

I then check the gun (press check, perhaps) and there is no round in the chamber. Thinking I forgot to load, I again chamber a round, this time a .45, level the gun and let fly. I have not tried this, though I might. But I wonder if it has caused any of the KBs I read about.

I did it once -- .40 / 180gr. Hydroshock in a Government Model. Bullet keyholed at ten yards, case split and no damage to the pistol. I guess it could be useful in an emergency -- marooned on a desert island with a .45 and a case of .40 cartridges.
