Firearms laws chaging for the better? Odds?

My friends, it seems that more and more, there are more and more gun laws, and less and less care for the Constitution in this country. There are always new gun laws, but the old ones never go away.

Has anyone here ever heard of a major gun "control" law being repealed?

If so, what are the odds that the following laws will ever be repealed? (My opinions are in parentheses)

Assault Weapons/Hi-Cap magaazine ban. (slim)
Assault Weapons Import Ban. (If the former happens, it's possible)
NFA Weapons 1986 Cut-Off. (NO chance in hell)
Gun Control Act of 1968. (Keep dreaming, shooter!)
National Firearms Act of 1934. (Stop laughing, I know, I know...)

Opinions?

Nightcrawler,

It all depends on your perspective. 31 States now have carry laws of some sort. More of them are becoming "Shall Issue," as did TN a few years ago.

Of those that have carry laws, most of them are liberalizing them. Allowing carry in more places with fewer restrictions.

While the states are making progress, the Federal Government has been stalled. There are still enough Demicraps and anti-gun Rebublicraps to prevent devolution of gun laws on the national level. Hopefully, after Algore is disposed of, and the Demicraps are out of power in Congress, we can start supporting Libertarians and repeal some stupid laws.

Nightcrawler - the assault weapons ban sunsets automatically in 2004. In order for the Congress to have the political cover it needs not to reenact it - we need a really positive pro-rights showing in this election and we will need the Republicans to not only be aware of our power; but to owe us one.

If gun owners can deliver California then we are in the realm of possibility on that one I think. Right now Portrait of America shows Bush only 4% (with +/- 1.8% margin) behind Gore in CA. So it is certainly possible (especially if it looks like earlier voting results from other states show Gore losing).

As for NFA of 1934 - it may not get repealed but chances are very good of portions of it being overturned as unconstitutional (check out Lomont vs. Buckles and the 1934 Group)

I've got a bridge to sell you :)

Serious, though, I wish that the assault weapon ban DID NOT have a sunset.

Because before it does, Congress will have "business to do" and the media will push and push and the imperative will be to "not let evil assault weapons kill babies".

Why do I not want to go through this again? Because you guys haven't seen the restrictions on imported weapons, the "sporting" test - I fear that they'll expand the assault weapons ban to include anything that can take a high-cap or pistol grips.

Waitaminute. The '94 Fun Guns ban "sunsets" in 2004? You mean it ends?

That seems strange even for the libs. I mean, what's the point of banning something you're going to make legal again in 10 years?

What groups if any even talk to congress about repealing or which is more commonly used overwritting any GC laws?
Enlighten me Ive never read of any such suggestions in the American guardian in the past year.

Ruger45: Well, no, you're not going to see anything in the American Guardian, an NRA publication, about repealing gun control laws. The NRA has given up on that, though they're not about to say so to the membership.

There is a zero percent chance that things will get better. The best we can hope for is to slow the inevitable...VOTE BUSH!!!

What we need is for some of our states to prove to all of us that they have a pair and tell the Feds to take their laws and stick them (censored). Sorry I got caught up in the gist of things. If a state decides that its citizens can carry a select fire Glock 18, then they can carry them. The only problem is that the Feds have made it illegal to import. The point is, Fedreal Law is a guideline but a state has the final say so, except where a Sheriff steps in and tells them both to go jump.

Ah, the doctrine of the sherrif! Fat chance.

Anyway, things will stay steady state at the Federal level if Bush gets in.

However, actions can be taken at the state level to increase the shall issue states and
perhaps, as said above, remove some restrictions.

Some of you say it's never going to get better. Okay, then, what's going to happen? Are we all doomed to slavery? Doesn't it seem a little early to be giving up all hope? I mean, sure, it's going to be tough, but let's not give up. There's too much at stake for a defeatist attitude.

Tell me more about the Assault Weapons ban. It ends in 2004, unless it's renewed? How on earth did that clause get into the bill, with a Democratically controlled congress?

Agree 100%. We may not do it yet and it may take the rest of my life; but we can roll this back. First step is to educate people on their rights and teach them WHY they are important.

As for the sunset in 2004, I believe the NRA helped insert that clause. That means many of the aspects of the 1994 "We don't care about guns we just want to punish conservatives" bill will cease to be Federal law without an active attempt by Congress to renew it.

With the Dems in, it is going to pass - no question. With the Republicans in, we need to remind them of these Union jackets at NRA meetings and the crucial role that gun-owners played in swing states. They need to understand out power and be convinced that we will use it against them. It's still less than 50/50 but I think it is much easier to convince Congress to do nothing than it is to convince them to repeal.

No no no. . . .

The reason the assault weapon ban sunsets has nothing to do with the NRA, or anything else.

The reason it sunsets is that the A/W ban was attatched to an omnibus crime bill intended to last 10 years.

It might as well have been the "Mideast flowers Bill" or anything else, as they tack things on.

So, the 10 year crime bill HAPPENS to ban "assault weapons".

It's not unusual, they've been trying to attach gun licencing/registration bans to unrelated bills for ages.

I once had a guy say as he was walking out of the gun store looking at the guns
'theyll all be gone in 8 years just like england'.
I asked and he was not a part of any lobby.
So I crudely said 'then you dont have any reason to complain now do you ' he started to reply but just got annoyed and left.

So I want to ask all of those here who dont feel things will change what are you a part of ,how is your voice being represented.
When the lobby the people who receive your money go to congress are they pushing/lobbying for changes are they shouting out that these gunlaws are unconstitutional and racist or do they simply play politics.
Maybe were not seeing any changes or the coming there of because very few of us are asking for any...
anyone else tired of spinning your wheels and not going anywhere?
If Im wrong please show me where?
I personally feel that many of us have to complacent and become quite happy with the status quo to be able to say 'Im involved' or almost like a politician 'Im -doing- something no matter how miniscule or pleading
(on our knees asking for mercy from tyrants)
it may be.
Are we happpy simply stating our positions
or will their come a time when we decide to attack back and destroy guncontrol for the facist ,murderous (racist) propaganda laws that they are.
